Looks highly likely Australia has just written pfizer a bigger cheque.. to solve a political headache

Can't have those Kiwis getting their Pfizer before us...

But from a bubble perspective the faster vaccination happens in OZ the better for us...

Australia's supply of the Pfizer vaccines has been brought forward, with 4.5 million doses anticipated to arrive in September now expected to be available in August.

Currently, between 300,000 and 350,000 doses of Pfizer are available each week, ramping up to 1 million doses a week in the second half of July.

The earlier arrival of the September doses could help lift the number of people inoculated against COVID-19 over the winter months.

Might be a bit of spin here - apparently Pfizer has put out a statement seeming to contradict the Australian PM

I think it is time for us to break out our MIQ room contingency and use that for people returning from NSW. The risk is getting way to high for me to be comfortable with allowing people to return to NZ isolation free from NSW from 11:59 tonight.

At the least they should be having follow up tests on day 5.

Personally I'd like to see them self isolate at home until they clear a day 5 test - and be actively checked on to make sure they are conforming.

(A daily random in person visit by police, health board, or even St John volunteer  would be a good start.
Be a good to do a welfare check at the same time. Eg How are you going - what do you need.

A phone call would be a bare minimum.)

NSW has serious issues. Another record day...

44 new local cases, 22 or them not in isolation.

Not in a position to lift lock-down on Friday

Tightening lock-down restrictions.

NSW finally pursuing a "hard lockdown" which they should have started 3 weeks ago.. NSW is heading the same way Victoria did in July 2020.

No its not, NSW are still speaking out of the side of their mouths ,

Its my understanding that places like JB Hifi/Harvey Norman/EB Games are still open..... and this remains unchanged even after the latest surge in cases....

The premier says,

"'Do not leave your home unless you absolutely have to': NSW Premier"

and

"Only one person per household should go shopping for essential items"

BUT,

Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant

"The reason we haven't defined essential is because clearly, people may need blankets, rugs, school shoes, these are the sort of things that are defined as essential.""

NO, they are talking past each other..

The OZ PM is talking about getting doses due in September in August..

Pfizer simply talks about the total deliveries to OZ haven't changed- which is true,

There is no contradiction in the two positions,

Pfizer have whacked out this statement to help fend off other nations saying "so can we have out supplies earlier than expected too"...

I suspect they are a bit annoyed that the OZ PM decided to shout it to the world that they have arranged to get their doses faster than previously signalled....

ABC report " 29 were either fully or partially in the community while infectious."

Hard and fast lockdowns should still work.  Delta means they have to be harder and faster than they were last year.

The NSW response was too soft and too slow.

Thats the bottom line, cases should increase over the next week with that many local cases that were not in isolation.

Yes, I get that, we have reduced MIQ, but if you or I were expats and decided in March 2020 that we need to get out of Covid and return to NZ when thats posisble, does it take 18 months to do that? Or are most of these "Kiwis" wanting MIQ for travel reasons, and that most Kiwis returning home, are home?

There's ~700,000 New Zealanders living overseas. There's a myriad of reasons they would need to return.

The report into MIQ looks at the issue with demand vs space and how rooms are allocated. It does suggest that this could possibly be outsourced to private parties to do a better job of looking after this.

In Australia airlines handle most bookings, and while there are pros and cons to this (the biggest con being plenty of evidence of spots being available if you're willing to book business class, but not if you book economy). On the plus side it solves most of the issues we have here with a huge disconnect between flights and rooms.

The Australian system is a huge mess. It's allocating spaces based on how much you can pay for a flight.

Some of the prices I saw being circulated on social media yesterday were astronautical - Musk, Bezos or Branson might be able to drop you anywhere on the planet for less.

It's awful. They way it works is if they get more Business Class or First class bookings is they start bumping economy.

It's even worse now they have cancelled 18000 places.

29... I think it was 11 yesterday.

This is really bad.

Regarding lockdowns, If we have a sniff of delta transmission here we will need to lock down hard and fast. I'm thinking L4 for the region it is in, L3 for the rest of the island, and L2 for the other island...

The above is going to be really expensive economically.

I think in that light we need to urgently re-evaluate the benefits & risks of isolation free travel from Australia, given the current situation in NSW, and the lack of an effective solution to stop people in NSW from transiting other states.

Given our first big vaccine shipment is due to land in 1.5 weeks, in say 8 weeks our vaccine roll out will be ramped up to roughly tipple the throughput it is now, and we can perhaps be a little bit more tolerant with risk. But we are extremely exposed right now.

Thats bordering on a National Pastime. Yes, no doubt we have some here that do this, but its a different ball game there

My granddaughter's flights back to Sydney were cancelled twice in the last days and she finally left yesterday with another family via Melbourne to Sydney instead of direct which added hours to the flight. The Qantas area at the airport was like a morgue devoid of passengers bar us, two attendants at the desk and one at baggage. I asked how many were flying...55 people. Obviously it’s not worth putting flights on for the few who want to travel.
