A good move. Clearly they are concerned about their ability to handle so many medical cases. Makes sense to try and slow down the catch rate so their facilities can handle it. Nothing worse than having caring doctors/nurses deciding who gets a ventilator and who doesnt.

Last week, I wrote about a variety of the US government policies that will drive suspected coronavirus (COVID19) patients underground. One specific factor is the lack of paid sick leave and punitive workplace policies.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that 24% of US workers—more than 30 million people—don't get paid sick leave. Of those with the lowest pay (e.g., service industry workers), more than half have no sick pay. In fact, part-time employees or those who work for small employers are not even entitled to unpaid sick leave. Many of these low-wage workers are in the service industry—food workers and housekeepers—and also in childcare. Do you want someone taking care of your youngster while they are ill because they can’t afford to call in sick?

Judd Legum had a biting post yesterday in Popular Information, “Free breadsticks during a coronavirus outbreak,” about Darden’s Olive Garden’s policy, forcing ill servers to work if they couldn’t afford to lose the day’s meager wages. Legum also noted that Darden, Outback Steakhouse, McDonald's, and other large employers are lobbying for laws that would limit sick leave requirements. Companies have been successful in a dozen or more states⁠, including Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Wisconsin⁠. Darden had a profit of over $782 million before taxes, with its CEO, Gene Lee, making $15.7 million in 2018.

It's not gung ho, it's not good it's bloody awful. It is also reality. These are the exact decisions that the government is wrestling with. It's not a simple topic and it can't be dealt with easily. There are no good or easy decisions only how to minimise harm to society.

Does the reality change if you have elderly relatives here who are affected? It is easy to talk about categories of people in the abstract if you don't have a personal connection to them. I just don't like being dismissed as something to be managed for economic purposes. If I have to go for the public good, okay, but at least accord me the dignity of an honourable departure.

Professional footballers are falling like dominos, surely the Premier League will be postponed/suspended tomorrow (emergency meeting planned). The Arsenal coach has it, the entire first team is in self isolation. A Chelsea player has it and they are in isolation too. Juventus has 120 staff and players in isolation and Real Madrid are in isolation after a player from their pro basketball team tested positive (they share facilities).

Neither have I. Many politicians, and front line ones have it, or heavily exposed. Trudeas wife, Brazil leader, Trump exposed (ok with that) Boris's health minister. Its like dropping liquid honey on the floor, it creeps everywhere.

Like my 74 year old.mother who has a history of infections? Or my niece who takes immune suppression drugs for her kidney transplant? No that doesn't change reality. It makes it worse.

These are impossible decisions that can't be made "correctly". We also need to honest with each other about the implications of decisions being made (or not).

Definitely time for
1) NZ to shut the boarder completely.
2) enforce quarantine on those affected. Pump some money into ACC & make quaritine an "injury". pay people 80 percent of their wages to sit at home. prioritise police resources to ensure they stay at home.

We have been fortunate to date in that there has not been community spread "at least that we know of". But IMHO we are treading on thin ice. Our luck will run out very soon.

It should be noted that even if we "close the border", in line with international immigration norms, we will need to accept our own citizens, meaning that (assuming some airlines keep flying) we will not have eliminated the risk anyway.

Kinda glad it's not my call. Basically whatever decision is made will be ripped to shreds in the media.

I agree, BUT with 5 cases, and nothing for a week, when "some" noise from new cases isn't happening, it would seem silly to act like we went from 5 to 75 in a few days. Its gone from 5 to 5. Maybe its really 5 to 10, but any exponential growth starts off puny. The nest step is also puny. Hold off.

Scientists are racing to find a vaccine for the coronavirus, but as i have snoop out, we will have to wait at least one year.

I have read it that Wuhan closes last makeshift coronavirus hospital and that infection rate falls in China...so good for them, but the problem for us and other countries have just started.....

The closing of our border is a decision that should not be taken lightly. I am sure the PM is receiving a lot of briefings from various sector experts. The PM will have at hand far more information at hand than that which is available here. Closing the border may well be the wrong option and may hinder our ability to combat the virus and maintain the treatment of other conditions.

I totally agree about your objective statement but not about your subjective interpretation.

As I said previously we may have to bite the bullet. I understand that Italy is triaging already based on age and pre existing conditions but that's when the virus gets a grip.

How many cases does Italy have? 12000? NZ is 5. NZ is small and not in the middle of Europe, which will exceed China by a country mile in two weeks. Need to stop panicking. And Im one who heavily favours early harsh isolation.
