The closing of our border is a decision that should not be taken lightly. I am sure the PM is receiving a lot of briefings from various sector experts. The PM will have at hand far more information at hand than that which is available here. Closing the border may well be the wrong option and may hinder our ability to combat the virus and maintain the treatment of other conditions.

I wonder if it is because a lot of other stuff is also transported on passenger planes, such as medications. So if those planes aren't flying, then it won't get delivered. I would hope there are contingencies in place or maybe that is what they are working on.

I see Australia have now banned gatherings of more than 500 people. Doesn't includes schools or public transport. I would have thought public transport would be a bit of a problem. I remember when I used to catch the train, I used to always get colds, as they were often overloaded.

Australia is a bad example. ScoMo waited till the Formula 1 teams arrived, THEN he banned Italy (who have many F1 people) Then see what happened.

How many cases does Italy have? 12000? NZ is 5. NZ is small and not in the middle of Europe, which will exceed China by a country mile in two weeks. Need to stop panicking. And Im one who heavily favours early harsh isolation.

yes but Denmark had 7 cases on March 4th. they now have 676 cases. They were like us 10 days ago now they are screwed

I see Italy now has 1000 deaths, But it says only 15,000 people are reported to have it. If following Chinas death rate, the number of actual people who have it could more than  double that figure. Guessing a lot of people may not being tested, or wonder if there is another reason why their death rate percentage is a lot higher?

Overwhelmed probably. Wife is from Wuhan, she knows one in her Mums apartment (Mum lives with us now) who needs dialysis. Died as no dialysis. Another with issues, no help, died. A lot of people die from being inadvertently neglected. But this wont figure in the stats. Those that have COVID-19 at hospital will, get the care that they can manage, it may not be in time. Wuhans fatality rate was high, but the infection rate was as well. Too many patients.

In the UK, their prime minister has announced that a lot of our older loved ones lives are going to be cut short by this event. Him saying this brought home the  reality of what is occurring over in the UK, because it seems that unlike in NZ, they don't see it as being a low chance of there being widespread community transmission. The economic effects are going to occur no matter what, and other countries are essentially going to be shutting themselves off from travelling anyway.

So tourism is going to be almost non existent, due to NZ having no control over what occurs overseas. However if we keep NZ clear of this by isolating ourselves from the rest of the world, then at least the tourism sector maybe able to survive if we holiday locally. We have 5 million people after all.

A lot changes in just a few days!

Yes, a lot!

IMO we are isolating ourselves. Small, remote, and only 5, could easily have been 25, but its 5. No one wants to go anywhere, so the travel bans mean not many come here now. Tourism here is screwed, so yes, they may well target the locals, and good idea.

freitasm: Australia banning gatherings of more than 500 people.

It doesn't look like a ban, it is formal guidance with no teeth.

ScoMo says he's going to the Cronulla Sharks opening game. Way to set an example.

Yes. Italy travel ban, great. After the F1 circus arrived, then Italy banned. Turned out well

Its crazy how many politicians have it or have been heavily exposed. (Not referring to your posts) It just shows how its getting into every nook and cranny of society.

dogstar001: Definitely time for
1) NZ to shut the boarder completely.
2) enforce quarantine on those affected. Pump some money into ACC & make quaritine an "injury". pay people 80 percent of their wages to sit at home. prioritise police resources to ensure they stay at home.

We have been fortunate to date in that there has not been community spread "at least that we know of". But IMHO we are treading on thin ice. Our luck will run out very soon.

I respect your posts. But you have seen it drizzle and want a wet suit. If our cases of 5 went from 1 to 5 to 25 I'd be wanting more than you are. But ts 5, like it was a week ago. I have NO issue with harsh action. But to trash our economy when there is zero evidence isnt wise. We aren't Brunei. Nor I am I suggesting we wait for  50 deaths before we act. There is a reason we are low. Puny population. Remote. No land border. Most are self isolating. We should have leaks showing up now (infected that got through the cracks) but we dont seem to have any yet. All the contacts of the 5 are registered and being watched. If there an issue  next week we can easily shut the border. Well, its shut now anyway. I expect we will ban US and Europe in the weekend. But bugger all are coming here right now.

I say we dont panic. We can easily and quickly act if we need to. So far, what we have done is working. It would be a pity to panic and have businesses (that are the life blood of NZ) dropping workers in panic, then next month we find we have one more case, not 450

Scientists are racing to find a vaccine for the coronavirus, but as i have snoop out, we will have to wait at least one year.

I have read it that Wuhan closes last makeshift coronavirus hospital and that infection rate falls in China...so good for them, but the problem for us and other countries have just started.....

So we now have an idea on how to replicate that. They are helping the rest of us out which is rather cool

Saw a bit of that, yes. They have it bad, Europe has failed bad IMHO. They had zero travel restrictions, only Italy had them. Italys issue isnt Italys fault its Europes fault, Italy was the one that copped it. I assume that's an EU caused issue? The issue is no borders, and I assume to act, it probably needs 24 EU meetings....

It would take 24 meetings to agree the schedule and agenda for the main meeting in that place!

Government Minister (Peter Dutton) now has confirmed case. Situation in Aussie is moving fast.

Peter Dutton went to the US, which might almost be as bad as Europe if we knew the true numbers, met with US Attorney General William Barr, Ivanka Trump and others.

He was in Washington for a conference "with other representatives for the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, which consists of the US, UK, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada".

Then he came back to Australia and attended a cabinet meeting.

Meanwhile Morrison is going to the NRL.

From the Brisbane times: A spokesman for Mr Morrison said he had originally planned to attend the NRL game to make it "very clear" the medical advice from the experts about mass gatherings of more than 500 people was not taking immediate effect and there was "no serious immediate health risk" to Australians attending such events over the weekend.
