I can’t agree it’s the strictest. The US has banned travellers from Europe full stop. Italy has 16 million people in lockdown. Etc.

I'm with you. India has cancled non-nationals entry Visa's. Philipines is blocking non nationals (excluding spouses and kids) from about 60 countries.

Our pritty please, self isolate yourself, bit it is ok to take mutiple domestic flights firs is a relaxed approach in comparison.

That said, mass flight cancellations may function as an effective full ban.

Perhaps. NZ has in effect captured every country. USA lets in UK which seems to be slow to act. Italys lockdown, is it really a lockdown? They go to work, shop, shops shut at 6pm.

As per your following post, yes we could ban all flights, but I cannot see a reason to do that.

Italys lockdown, is it really a lockdown? They go to work, shop, shops shut at 6pm

Its been widely reported over the last 2 days that only supermarkets and pharmacies are allowed to open in Italy.

Blow 6k of Australian beach holiday or 2 weeks non pay on return and pissed off work colleagues because if I'm off they cant have their holiday and they would have to cover my night shifts and Easter would also be affected.

Do I send the wife and kids over by them selves?

hard to know. this virus is going to be around the world for a while, if not forever. i cannot blame you if you decide to go. seriously. it's a lose-lose.

secondly, the govt should really legislate insurance law. do not cover if you cancel the trip other than illness. but cover you if you get illness during the trip. that's really asking for trouble.

Apparently there will be spot-checks, whatever that means.

It's all about slowing the spread though and it's a numbers game. Some people will flout the rule but there will also be a large number of compliant people. It will also stop a lot of people travelling here altogether. Fewer people coming in = slower spread.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

The German Army medical service has called on reservists to report on duty to strengthen the five renowned military hospitals in Germany (in general open to civilists as well).

Ambiguity is a mess. Some are saying Sunday to Monday, as "midnight Saturday" limit for cruise ships seems to be tonight.

Would be good to use appropriate time instead of these words.

Surely customs will want proof of where you will be spending your 14 days isolation. So tourists even if they plan on skipping isolation will still have to book a hotel room for two weeks to get into the country.

I imagine over the next couple of weeks there will be a couple of cases of people skipping isolation that will hit the media. The govt will look bad and at that point start being stringent on it, with daily checks etc.

They probably want to run with the voluntary thing to start with so they don't come across as facist.

Deportation costs often lie on the airline to recoup.
I could be wrong but expect with this age of esta flags on passports and return tickets tied to passport num they will know roughly how long one is staying and make attempts at the departing border to flag for questioning

Hopefully such details come out in time

Quite a backlash

Following the Prime Minister's press conference, senior Infometrics economist Brad Olsen tweeted that it was the right move, but a "gut punch to the economy".

"Business activity will experience a swift decline, and job losses will rise. Comprehensive fiscal stimulus needed ASAP. What can people do? Consider a roadie to somewhere you haven’t been in NZ to support tourism."

Former chief economist at ANZ Cameron Bagrie said the Government "better have a bazooka fiscal / govt support package to announce in the next day or so".

"The economic impact of this is massive. We are now talking a deep recession. A govt bazooka is needed to make it less deep. We are in a lose lose situation. Just don’t lose too big."

Union E tū, which has about 8000 aviation members, says the scale of disruption will be "unlike anything we've witnessed before".

"We have implemented a comprehensive plan to ensure union members and their workplace leaders are supported and can get the information they need. We have already been involved in talks and negotiations with multiple employers," Savage, the union's head of aviation, said.

"That work will escalate in the weeks ahead as employers begin consulting employees about what the shutdowns mean in their sector."

Savage said the announcement would have a flow-on effect to the domestic and regional network.

"Workers risk redundancies if these hard measures carry on too long," he said.

"The Government’s commitment to supporting the Aviation industry will be vital. Aviation is a life blood industry. It must be supported and ready to rebound soon as the restrictions finish.

"Aviation workers are skilled workers with high security clearance - the industry cannot afford to lose their skills and workers must remain ready to take off again as soon as possible."

It almost sounds as if they feel that imposing a 14 day isolation on everyone will cripple this country, so better to back off that. IMHO, the more we can restrict at the border means the more freedom we have to keep working, keep the economy ticking over. Should we prefer an easy and leaky border and when we get the virus big time, thats what will cripple the economy. It appears that short term pain for a few is less acceptable than long term pain for many. Thats really short sighted

The alternative IMO would have been far worse for the economy then this.. At least this allows the domestic economy to largely continue as normal. Do these people think the situation in Italy or China is better than this option, if we can end up being virus free in a few weeks, as long as there isn't community tranmission?

1. Self isolate everybody

2. Ban non nationals from every country. Unsure how Kiwis will get here if a flight can only have kiwis

The full ban, mass flight cancellations is what 2. would be, no access for Kiwis.

Random checks, seeing as you didn't watch the feed. Im sure thats been documented. But as you are alluding to who will enforce every single person on a 24/7 basis, no, that wont happen, for obvious reasons. So either we accept peoples word or we take over some building and mass quarantine them, is that your suggestion?

Note that NZ has been part of the virus world, the same period as everywhere else. We have had 4 imported cases. That tells me that its working here.
