DS248:

Not certain this outbreak is going to flatten out and case numbers drop as quickly as we hoped.

Still adding new LoI's from as far back as 10 Aug!  Our first local LoI just added 8pm 26 Aug (Unichem Pharmacy Silverdale) for 19 Aug.  Anyone impacted has had a week not knowing about it.

I reckon it will but it might take another coupla weeks of lockdown to do so. Remember anyone relevant not knowing about it since Aug 19 has been at home and wearing a mask when they went shopping.

Ever stamped out a fire? You don't do it all at once but if you keep stamping, you get there in the end.

What has surprised me is that the media haven't been calling out lockdown flouters this time. Yet in my area there have been a lot of flouters. I caught someone walking across the road and going into a neighbors house with a bottle of wine. They looked guilty when they saw me. But I don't live in Auckland and there are no known cases in my town, so people are  being more lax. It is more of a level 3 or level 3.5

Are Aucklanders all being complaint with the lockdown? It is essentially going to become an Auckland lockdown if cases in other parts die out, which I think goes to show that Delta can be eliminated. But it can't get too much of a head start. Also any lockdown flouting could ruin it for everyone.

Lockdown 4.1 August 2021 is different from Lockdown 4.0 April 2020.

It's basically a level 3

DS248:

Plus now a staff member at a retirement home near Snells Beach has tested positive.  A household contact of a confirmed Covid-19 case who it seems may have been working while infectious!  Retirement home does not (yet?) appear to be added as a LoI.

Staff members who have been working closely with the positive staff member have gone into self-isolation and will only return to work once cleared by Public Health.

“Residents who were close contacts of the staff member will also go into precautionary isolation.

Previously they said he was already isolating for a bit but that was early on in the piece

Iceland has high vaccination and no deaths since May even though lots of cases

But delta is only starting there so we need to watch this space to guide what we should do

In that case I want my takeaway food 😆

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Where did you get that "delta is only starting there"?

This article from 3 weeks ago is already reporting "What has happened in the past two to three weeks is that the Delta variant has taken over all other variants in Iceland".

It's also stating:

"There are still some 30,000 unvaccinated people among older groups and they are more at risk" which doesn't tie in with claims in other media sources that "95% of the population is vaccinated".

"Authorities have decided to offer those who received the Janssen vaccine a booster shot of Pfizer".  (It's becoming pretty clear that the single shot Janssen vaccine is not very effective against preventing symptomatic infection with Delta.)

So what's happening there is probably not really a "guide to what we should do".

One thing that probably hasn't received as much media attention as it deserves was yesterday's health select committee.

Prof David Skegg in particular was pretty sobering to listen to, warning that this year was our golden year and that 2022 is going to get a lot more difficult for us with constant outbreaks as we reopen the border.

There is a brief summary of some (but certainly not all) of what he said here https://www.odt.co.nz/news/national/lockdown-likely-weeks-covid-war-years-skegg

He was however quite confused about Bluetooth tracing, and hopefully Government aren't just relying on people like him for key advice on our Covid response!

... but we already know that at least one of those infected was, and almost certainly more were.  I vaguely recall hearing a figure but from a quick check, can't find anything online.   ...

Not certain where the info came from but on the TV1 news last night they said (if I heard correctly) "over 40" of the current cases had had at least one dose of vaccine.  That is from a total of 277 cases, though only 84 of them people 40 or over.  So could be around 40% of the 40+ age group cases (since a week or so ago most people vaccinated were in that age group - Group 1 & 2 people aside).

Yes it's entirely believable that in general, going forward, it only gets worse.

Even a simple little thing like wearing a mask. Do we want that to be the norm - forever?

What was said dated very quickly. Someone should play this back to him for his comment

I don't know if Hosking is either capable of or interested in maintaining a consistent line on Covid or any other topic, as that's not the point (I'd imagine it's a common affliction amongst shock jocks: the job is more about contrariness and manufacturing controversy). Covering his inability to do so has become a staple of RNZ's Media Watch; while I've not been able to find some of the programme's more recent coverage, this one from last year is a classic:

Hosking probably follows the Tucker C example. "A federal judge on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit against Fox News after lawyers for the network argued that no “reasonable viewer” would take the network’s primetime star Tucker Carlson seriously."
