I expect there's going to a strong preference to go for booster shots from the same source as first doses - because there's going to be some clear vaccine efficacy data earlier because for example, that's what's Pfizer are testing - a "third dose".

The European Union’s Digital COVID Certificate is rapidly shaping up to be the standard for international vaccination, test and recovery certification, with international airline trade body IATA, the International Air Transport Association, backing it for global adoption by the aviation industry.

All 27 EU member states and a half-dozen non-EU states are already using the Digital COVID Certificate (DCC) standard for interoperability with their own systems, including, most recently,Turkey, Ukraine and North Macedonia as of 19 August. In the absence of any meaningful standardisation progress from the International Civil Aviation Organisation or the World Health Organisation, the swiftly implemented EU standard looks like an increasingly good bet.

Does anyone know if the NZ MoH work going to comply with this emerging de facto standard, or are they going to generate some unique NZ solution?

But the NZDF presense at MIQ facilities is not that high - so many people seem to have the idea they are the security presence, which is not (and never has been) the case. They pretty much want out of the small role they're still performing.

The biggest issue would be whether the local DHB or contractors can provide enough staff.

So the ASG (that would be Auckland Security Group, comprised entirely of NZDF) along with HSG, RSG, WSG and CSG don't provide a security presence? Not to mention every facility having and NZDF MIF manager and team working for them...

For a small defence force, the numbers provided are a significant percentage, regardless of how "small" you may think it is.

I never said they don't provide a security presence.

The fact is they want to reduce their security role, but when MBIE tried to hire their own security personnel to compliment First Security who provide security at every facility nationwide they found nobody wanted to work for them.

This is not correct. MIQ was always 100% booked initially and no doubt is again currently. There was a time last year pre bubble when there was a lot of MIQ capacity available to book and the word was put out. Returning travellers chose not to book it so planned maintenance was brought forward and at least two facilities were removed from the MIQ system to carry out the work.

Do you have a source for this? I have know several people in the US and UK who have been unable to secure a spot since the start of the pandemic and would have absolutely booked once had there been spare capacity.

We had a glut of rooms available for booking for a few weeks around the start of the bubble (for bookings for the ~3 month period that bookings were available for). While nothing has ever been officially said and the PM just brushed it off as people cancelling, there was a lot of speculation that one particular hotel chain was sitting on the fence when it came to resigning their contract, so they'd removed all their rooms from supply. When they resigned, the rooms were added back in creating plenty of availability.

The total number of rooms available now (and over the next few months) is well down on what it was in 2020 and earlier in2021, some of this because of the cohorting system.

cases going up according to Herald's crystal ball

That's hardly a crystal ball or the insider leaking information to the NZ Herald - it's the associate health minister saying case numbers are higher!

Purpose built MIQ facilities: they could use them for emergency housing/women's refuge between pandemics.

1035 cases in NSW, 2 deaths.

There are currently 778 COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital, with 125 people in intensive care, 52 of whom require ventilation.

No see we waited too long to do anything like this so now we get to say there's no point in doing it because we won't need them.

I think purpose built does need to happen, but you can't really put emergency people in there then kick them out. Maybe if there are near locations where schools and young person clubs like Scouts can use them for outdoor trips for educational purposes. Probably a few options for temp use, or motels.

Sbiddle, I think you may have a stellar career in politics ahead of you

FYI, there are currently around 1200 NZDF personnel dedicated solely to the COVID response, which when you look at the size of trained personnel in the force, is hardly a "small role".  And we're still putting ships to sea and operating aircraft

Hindsight. Early doors, we cant build them in 5 minutes. Later, why build them to then sit empty forever? NOW, we know this pandemic will be here in some form for years, and others will happen. So, yes, now we should plan where and how big, and what in-between crises, uses we can make use of them, so we can flick a switch and turn them on when we need them.

I'm only interested if our positive waste water test actually turns into a case outside of MIQ.

Also NZ Herald most likely has a MoH leaker. This isn't no crystal ball effort here.
