Got pinged today:

An interesting story from my extended family in the Philippines. One of my elderly relatives had not left home for roughly 18 months (due to risks with existing medical conditions). In the Philippines the major cities were prioritized for vaccines, and she is in a smaller town, so she (despite her risk profile) only recently finished her course of sinovac. Diligently waited out the 2 week period after the second dose.

She went out for the first time to some religious event. Posted all over social media etc.

The driver that took here their was infected with covid-19, and she caught it. - Luckly it was fairly mild, but what are the odds....

Got pinged today:

Check the posted times to see if you were a close contact (same place, same time) or just a casual (same place, different time), since they ping on both. Your yellow(-ish) one implies casual rather than close, when I got pinged you had to phone them to verify the exact time which would change your notification colour to orange if you were there at the same time.

Since you're in masks-mandatory Auckland and it looks so far like a casual contact, there's a good change you're OK.

Time window on places of interest list was 6pm -8pm. I scanned in at 7:03pm.

What to do is "Self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms for 14 days after you were exposed at this location of interest. If symptoms develop, get a test and stay at home until you get a negative test result AND until 24 hours after symptoms resolve." - not to different to what we are expected to do anyway.

Oddly, despite needing to pass through a mall to enter this supermarket, my scan into the mall also at 7:03pm hasn't flagged.

Interestingly enough, from previous reports some people still go out with symptoms or go out even while waiting for a test result. So "not to different" for some people means "I will just keep doing what I want".

Here is how Covid has affected me.

My mother died in Waikato Hospital overnight. Not of Covid (she was fully vaccinated) but alone due to my sister, who is also double jabbed (and tested) and lives 5 minutes away from the hospital, not being allowed to visit.

I am stuck in Auckland. I have been double jabbed for more than six months, I get tested twice a week (always negative), I am a fastidious user of the tracing app, I have a border crossing exemption for work that means I am travelling weekly but I still couldn’t travel to the Waikato. And now I will need to beg to attend her funeral.

If I came across as angry in the past, it pales into insignificance now.

@Dingbatt mate I'm sorry for your loss, and the additional anguish caused by the circumstances.  Please keep in close and regular contact with friends and loved ones to discusss this if it helps you process, especially close family for whom the loss will be a heavy weight for a while.

Wow... that was a close call!  Good on her for being so cautious.

My sister got pinged 2 days ago.  Apparently the MoH called her as she scanned in at a supermarket less than a minute after a confirmed case on October 3rd.  This of course caused a bit of concern, but fortunately her first test came back negative.

I am really so very sorry for your loss. I can totally understand why you would feel so angry and upset. I hope you will get to attend her funeral.

I am also sorry this has happened to you. It really sucks. I hope you can find support here and elsewhere if you need it. I'm sure many people are more than ready to do what they can.

Very sorry to hear that Dingbatt. My Father in law got unwell and passed away during the recent level 4 (Wellington) so it was a pretty rough time with not being able to do anything and having to wait to do a funeral etc.

Only one anecdote I know, but my parents had to travel to and from Auckland yesterday for a health appointment (live in Waikato, Dad was having surgery at Auckland Hospital) and it didn't appear to be particularly difficult to get through the border checkpoint. On the way in the person wasn't really interested in seeing any documents and said they were more interested when you're leaving Auckland, and on the way out they didn't do much more than a quick glance at their ID. They live in Te Awamutu and I notice it's been found in wastewater there today so I'll have to ask if they have had particularly nasty poos since getting home!

I am one step closer to being "free".

My wife, eldest son and I all went and got our second dose yesterday.

For them it was 5 weeks and for me, right on 3 weeks.

I once again got myself well and truly wasted on my prescription medication of choice, got driven there and didn't feel a thing.

Arm aches like crazy today though, but no other side effects.

I just wish they'd implement a decent fraud-proof Covid Passport, so that people who have been double-jabbed can move more freely and we can start to live our lives more normally.
