Just went to the supermarket at the airport

About 8 campervans in carpark.
Majority of them in the store collecting supplies

I would prefer a 2nd health rep be there reminding them what they've just been told!

I don't really see dolphin watching as an essential business that should receive financial support. In my opinion I believe any assistance packages should aimed at business that are providing essential services or supporting essential services.

Serious? Ok, so all tourist activites must fall under that umbrella. Every one is entertainment, they are not essential. That's 400,000 directly affected according to the media today. Every tourist business brings in foreign exchange, and employs people so that MSD doesnt have to pay the dole. I'm surprised that you want to cast 400,000 people aside so easily. There is no tourist activity that can be deemed an essential business. In fact many businesses are not essential, but they for a key part of our economy

They should be directed to the airport long term parking lot and told they can leave in 2 weeks time.

Did you read about the backpackers at the airport early this am? No intention to self quarantine.

Did you read about the backpackers at the airport early this am? No intention to self quarantine.

It should NOT be optional, everyone should be directed to a quarantine station to wait out their 14 days.

They can optionally take the next plane home.

Ugh so i was trying not to wade into this to much but this hit a nerve......

@MikeB4 - you might not think that its an essential business.. think about the tourism industry as a whole, not just the direct tourism companies but also the companies that supply these companies like the ones that supply all the souvenirs and other services, also what about the IT companies that are supplying services to them? This is going to have a massive impact to NZ and I don't think the average person understands or sees how big of an impact this is going to have to NZ as a whole for a long time.

not just tourism but the event industry too like festivals and the likes all face massive uncertainty

I know for a fact that companies are already laying people off and it was only announced Saturday, other companies are going down to 4 days a week with the 5th either unpaid or annual leave.

@tdgeek - that number is very small if we are talking direct and indirect numbers we are looking upwards of a million people I would guess.

It isnt optional

Im sure its not the norm by any stretch but it just takes one. Should be chased down and deported. The reporter should have reported them this morning right then

There may be others out there who are asymptomatic/have very mild symptoms who are going about their lives spreading the virus round. The long incubation period of the virus means these won't come to light for at least a week.

OTOH, we can be fairly sure that there weren't any infected people (apart from those already isolated) in NZ a week ago, otherwise we would be seeing a whole lot of newly infected people presenting to EDs today.

And that's true - the person in Auckland who gave it to their partner. Both in quarantine.
The question is how many others have it now?

@ResponseMediaNZ I am aware of that, however New Zealand does not have a bottomless pit of financial reserves. The government for now has a surplus of circa $7Billion and a debt level of circa 19% GDP but that will change rapidly. The government simply cannot support every business and in my opinion should concentrate on keeping the essential industries and services running and those business that support them. EG transport, energy, communications, health etc. Sadly there will be business casualties as with any deep recession and the government has safety nets in place to assist individuals.

Article today said direct and indirect, I guess it depends how indirect they mean. A very small country town where there is an attraction, the small diner is very much a valuable and indirect part of that attraction, supporting the tourists that support the attraction

Brings to mind the South Korea experience, where one infected congregation member was apparently the source for hundreds if not thousands of new infections.

Community transmission is a case that cannot be tied back to an established case; e.g. one where someone has it but with no connection to anyone who has traveled. I am not aware if we have had that but it is a safe bet that we probably do.
