Im not suggesting we pay everyones wages. COVID-19 is an Act of God as were Whaakari and EQ's. But anyway, if its better to pay the full dole thats ok with me, probably easier to manage as well as being more costly. But please dont think I am in favour of handouts to business. They are social welfare funds for the employees, that are out of a job no fault of theirs or the employers. Will tax be raised to 70% to fund this? I'm not really sure. These are employees that are unemployed, so they will all get the dole, they will all be standard BAU unemployment payments.

There will be other measures thats already been sorted with the banks.

The problem is going to be mortgages on these high priced houses that people have been buying, should people lose their jobs. I wonder if mortgage insurance will cover this due to the circumstances? Are landlords going to be kicking people out who can't pay rent due to loss of work, if they then cqan't afford to pay their rent?. Then you have people who own Airbnbs who have mortgages, who need tourists to rent them, which will largely dry up. I had read that there are nearly 40,000 houses rented out on Airbnb type sites in NZ, which sounds large.  I guess one good side is that they may sell them, and they go back into the housing pool for people to live in, due to us already having a housing crisis.  I listened to one financial expert yesterday who said that he does think house prices will be affected by this in some way.

Community transmission is a case that cannot be tied back to an established case; e.g. one where someone has it but with no connection to anyone who has traveled. I am not aware if we have had that but it is a safe bet that we probably do.

Over here in Canada they now assume community transmission's well underway as a couple of the newly diagnosed mild COVID-19 cases have been walking around the city for weeks, and no obvious chain of infection shows where they caught it. Likely hundreds are infected just from them.

Diagnosed numbers have nearly doubled in 24 hours - pointing to the same thing.

We're encouraged to strengthen our social distancing measures and not leave home for non-essential reasons, strictly limit social gatherings of any kind.
Shops and malls are starting to close.

They've also closed all high schools and post-secondary education institutions - until after Summer Break - in September!

So I'm potentially going to be working from home.. with my teens locked in the same house.. for over 4 months? Oh no..

I think they should be closing schools in NZ too immediately for a few weeks until we can judge what the extent of community transmission is. If it does exist, then schools could be making it spread worse, as they are all essentially large extended gatherings.  But the problem is what you do with them, as most families now need two people working to cover costs like mortgage payments etc. Is the MOH still saying that the risk of widespread community transmission in NZ is still considered low, and are they still in the keep it out / stamp it out phase?

What do people think about how they are managing it in the UK, which appears to go against what the WHO recommends countries do?

I am hoping NZ becomes the blueprint of how this sort of event should be managed.

Closing the schools will cause big problems for hospitals as nurses are largely women and primary carers of children....

Close schools then risk nurse shortage.

If we are going to close schools we should slow elective surgery.

This happens over the two weeks of xmas.

@tdgeek  This makes no sense "COVID-19 is an Act of God as were Whaakari and EQ's."

It is a disaster not caused by people living here. Not really that relevant in any case, as if as many feel here, there is a massive effect on our ecomoiny, many will be unemployed, and they will all be recieving the Unemployment benefit, in full.

My brother is the primary child caregiver in their house, so the males can instead do it. I can see many elective surgeries being cancelled no matter what.

This article concerns me. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/120311663/coronavirus-traveller-shocked-by-lack-of-questions-information-on-arrival-in-auckland

Looks like some people will be using campervans to self isolate in for 12-14 days. I would have hoped that they would required to be in a fixed building / permanent contact point.

Mid day tvnz news found two people that were willing to go on national TV and state that they were going to evade self isolation requests.

There must be many thousands doing it on the down low.

It is pritty clear this voluntary, ok to take domestic flights and walk around the block isolation is not going to work.

We need to step up to self quarenteen, with twice daily random checks and prison time or deportation for people who evade.

We also need to commence aggressive social distancing for the next three weeks while the travel restrictions bed in. School, restaurant, nightclub closures etc.

That's a pretty "old school", dare I say it sexist, view of the world.  Maybe its an accurate statement - I don't know. I certainly know several female doctors (more than nurses funnily enough).

If my (primary aged) childrens school is closed I'll be doing quite a bit of the care (probably more than half) as I can work from home quite easily.

Casualites like any recession/unemployment I guess. The banks and Govt wont want mass foreclosures so Id say they would help out, refinance longer terms , mortgage holidays etc
