Batman: "It’s crazy, and I’ve been saying since the beginning of the outbreak ... we should not be allowing unvaccinated people to cross internal borders.”

https://i.stuff.co.nz/travel/news/126810216/covid19-crazy-to-allow-unvaccinated-people-to-fly-out-of-auckland-experts-say

Hmm... If you have a rule no traveling out of your area (eg Canterbury) without a vaccine passport...

I'm actually tiring of "experts" telling us things that simply aren't possible. It's simply creating public outrage.

I fully agree that you should not be able to fly on any domestic flight unless you're vaccinated, and that you should not be able to travel out of a L3 area unless you're vaccinated - but there is NO ability to put such a health order into effect right now when we don't have vaccine passports, and won't until the end of Nov when the system launches.

We started development of a vaccine passport system way too late, but remember up until last month the PM did tell us she was strongly against any restrictions for the unvaccinated.

Batman: I dropped in at a rural Otago restaurant / bar last weekend.

I walked in with a mask and nobody wore a mask.

As I passed a table of a large family one lady commented loudly "who would wear a mask that's such a stupid thing to do". Verbatim.

It's not just rural Otago.

I think I posted in here a few weeks ago about being in Tauranga and visiting a bar that didn't even have table service. Some people were wearing masks, but apart from that it was just business as usual.

I think for a lot of people in the South Island (most of my family are there) because they didn't have coronavirus for so long ("it's a North Island issue"), they sort of carried on with life as usual and didn't really view the virus as being an issue - I know that was the case with a lot of my family. That may explain the reaction you had Batman.

Pretty pathetic behaviour

It's been happening for months.

I just wish media wouldn't keep publicising the fact it's happening, because it's a bit like the needles in the strawberries - all that does is fuel more nutters to do the same thing.

I feel its more social media perpetrating this more than main stream. To some extent even sites like GZ could be by adding to Google hits.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Not sure why you've put "Experts" in quote marks here, often these are the same people the government had been taking advice from and guiding the pandemic response.

Now the advice they are giving is giving way to other considerations, is the expectation that they just disappear, or keep quiet? Shutting down dissenting academics is a bit of a chilling notion tbh.

Also, I'm not sure how bits of the response we undercooked as you point out actually get any meaningful scrutiny if we just go "oh well" and don't talk about them.

If it weren't for Michael Morrah or some of the other investigative journalists, our response would have looked very different and probably been far less successful.

I have a feeling that the authorities are losing control.

You can see the beginning of it, like dry sand running through your fingers. Sooner rather than later I think, "Events, dear boy, events." will overtake political life.

Your anti-vaxxer "freedom of choice" should not prevent someone else's "freedom of choice" to be vaccinated.

By doing this you are pushing your rights over other people's rights. You automatically lose. You are an idiot. You are nothing. You are a selfish dick.

There appears to be a tweet doing the rounds, unsure if satire or someone has it all wrong. Complete 180 on the whole population control idea - Someone confused why the unvaccinated are being unfairly targeted by the virus now. Cause, you know, It's only effecting those that choose not to cave to the govt control....

We're going to need that 29th November get-out clause by the look of it.

Sorry what get out clause? Cheers

Also if Auckland is on lockdown how hard is it to go door to door and bring the vaccine to people? It's not like they live miles apart away from civilization

Batman: Sorry what get out clause? Cheers

The PM said last week they would review where the country was at on the 29th of November, and may move everyone into the Traffic Light System early. I suspect this will all hinge on Tairawhiti and BOP DHBs getting their Vax rates up.

I think they will have to. The 'hikoi' currently camped at Mercer will be nothing compared to a million Aucklanders who want to get out to see family/go to their holiday homes/have Christmas.

Pretty sure she also said Aucklanders would be out for xmas. Possibly only vaxxed and tested ones, but how are they going to police that - no way they can stop everyone at the Bombays, the queue would go back to Albany.

That takes organisation and care. The fragile nature of mRNA vaccines is also a big factor. I discovered that the term "cold-chain" means today....

'cold chain refers to managing the temperature of perishable products in order to maintain quality and safety from the point of origin through the distribution chain to the final consumer'

mRNA needs to be really cold until close to point of use and then handled carefully.
