Great way to approach it.

My stepson in the last 6 months has started hammering his training and is seeing massive results.

That was after at least 3 years of trying to get him motivated on our part.

I have a Fitbit Surge and a Charge.

I use the Surge as a watch and everyday tracker and the Charge under a sweatband for when I play football.

One thing that I was particularly surprised at is how the game-like competition against friends (workweek hustle, Weekend warrior etc) really works to motivate a few (thousand) extra steps out of me and the friends i have the competitions with.

To put this in perspective...I am not slim, gym-inclined or a fan of working out.

I believe personal trainers should all be shot and gyms be converted to pubs.

I am getting fitter by the day...by accident.

I'd recommend the Fitbit Flex or Charge (you don't need the heartrate monitor...it's more of a nice-to-have gimmick).

Noel Leeming has the Fitbit Charge (not the heart rate model) advertised for $129.99 - cheaper than the lower-spec'ed Flex.

Harvey Norman has the Flex for $127 for a limited time.

dclegg: I'm looking for fitness tracker recommendations. The wearer will be my 13 year old daughter, and our primary goal is to gamify the process of getting her fit for netball. Her go to means of exercise is currently running, so something that will work well with that would be best. I'm hoping to keep it under $150, and am not really interested in a smart watch for her.

I'm currently leaning towards the Fitbit Flex, but are there other devices I should be considering? Ideally it would be something with an iOS companion app. Working with the iPhone 4 would be nice, but not essential if there is an app for the latest iPad Mini.

I really depends on what you want to track.  I really like the runkeeper app.  You can track walking, running, cycling plus some more.  And it posts directly to Facebook if you want.  But it is iOS.

I really like my UP24, and it would be perfect if it had a Heart Rate Monitor. The UP3 has been delayed AGAIN which is really frustrating. I like something that can accurately track sleep and steps, heart rate and be small and light. Would be ideal if it had a display.

I don't run, I want to track my squash.

Personally I use runkeeper for GPS when I'm running which displays my pace etc on a pebble watch in realtime. I use the Fitbit Flex for tracking my activity and MyFitnessPal app for tracking all of my food. Slightly obsessed but fitness is my thing.

I went with the Fitbit Charge, as the Noel Leeming discounted price was too good to pass up. Thanks andrew027 for pointing that out, and thanks to all for your suggestions.

It was a close run thing, as the Flex colours are more "Teen girl" friendly, and a Teal Flex from Harvey Norman nearly won out. But the extra functionality and better battery life for only $2 more sealed the deal.

I have the Fitbit Charge HR. It's awesome, but the price premium for the HR over the not HR charge probably isn't worth it if you don't really want or need HR tracking.

Yeah, we did consider that, but came to the conclusion it wasn't worth the increase in cost. In fact, if the Charge wasn't on special at NL, we would've been happy with the Flex.

No problem.

For reasons that would take too long to get into, I'm looking for one with HR functionality. After another three months of BNZ mortgage payments I'll be able to get the Surge with Fly Buy points, unless I see someone have a decent sale before then.
