I was thinking more in terms of double jabbed/-ve test if you want to travel to SI. Very easy to implement that.

You might as well make NI border free. It's not going to make much difference in the long run and the numbers will just ramp up quicker that's all. They are going to be high in any case.

The trouble is our poorly functional hospitals that haven't been given much love for the last 18 months nor seen much of the billions we handed out to people.

To be fair the Hospital situation has been decades in the making and pretty apolitical.
Fiscally responsible hand wringing, and everyone prefers tax cuts.

Training of trades and nurses seems to have not been a long term priority.
You can buy nurses in, sure, but then you compete with rest of the world.

A review of housing costs in Auckland ( Now all major cities ) compared with income,
and how staff are treated re parking/transport etc. Might blunt interest for those in high demand.

It may not sound like a most liveable country,
to be furthest away from rest of family.
In a pandemic some are going to be wondering if its a short term plan kicked the curb once over.

Yeh the whole 'shovel ready' thing had money sent to many of the wrong places.

190 Cases, deaths reported, Northland's first hospitalisation.

Also, only 900 1st doses in Auckland (whole region) yesterday.

Sure but we didn't have a pandemic decades ago.

We had a pandemic from 18 months ago, we have handed out billions.

So we had time, we had money.

Plus look at China, they built a huge covid hospital in a month in Wuhan to cope with the train crash they saw coming. We have a traincrash coming in the coming months and hopsitalisation are growing, but not sure on how we are going to cope. . China are still following the zero covid strategy too as it gives countries far more options not to have covid in the community. In NZ everything is so SLOW, and instead of governments and departments taking ownership, they blame previous governments.

That's a very high number of cases given that Sunday is typically a low day for testing.

If we assumed that that we were able to get all the 18742 tests (last 24 hours) processed by the 9am cut off - even though this is unlikely, this would give a test positive rate of greater than 1%.

Suggests there is a heap of undetected cases about.

And vaccination numbers have slowed to a crawl. Just 3,272 first doses nation wide. -even for a Sunday this is really low.

Cabinet will be in a tricky spot, having already made an in principal decision for Auckland.

Not too many leavers left for them to pull. I am expecting more vaccine mandates:

I think a mandate for Everybody on government payroll would be appropriate (especially police).

Won't happen. We're getting rock solid assurances about the fact we'll be able to move around.

The only question marks are how difficult that's going to be at the border at this point.

Although redrawing those boundaries to include the golden triangle and not include Northland/South of the mountains hadn't occurred to me. I wonder if that's being considered.

What I was suggesting was you'll be able to move around, but quite possibly not to the areas you thought was indicated and/or with system that's all but makes out of region travel impractical.

I wonder what the real rate of infection is in Auckland. Obviously based on the high % now testing positive, there are a lot of cases not being tested and I recall the MOH has been saying this for a few weeks based on the high positive rate, and has asked everyone ion some suburbs to be tested, but that seems to be largely ignored by most. Many may think they will end up in MIQ as they may not be able to isolate from other household members, and then they can't go out to work as many lower income people ae really struggling financially. IMO a lack of support and helicopter payments is one reason Auckland failed to eliminate it.

I suspect such a move at this point would be seen as a bait-and-switch at this point, and ultimately achieve very little.

If there was still buy-in from Aucklanders required for some sort of lockdown required at that point then something like this would absolutely torch it.

Vaccination being at a certain level in other parts of NZ, and hospital and ICU capacity to cope with cases is really the end game.

With all these people leaving Auckland, it could put a lot of pressure on hospitals in others parts of NZ, when much of the capacity for the population is in Auckland. Makes it difficult for people to isolate too, as there could be a lot of motels and hotels , Air BNBs having rooms with people with covid or not being able to find somewhere to isolate. It is going to increase the cases, and I don't think many will want covid for Christmas. There will likely be over a million people who have no protection against covid too. 81 in hospital today, the number is again rising rapidly.

Vaccination rates in other parts of the country suggest they're reasonably ambivalent about the prospect of Covid at all.

At some point that shouldn't be considered Auckland's fault, or problem. You can't keep the biggest city in the country locked down because other bits of it refuse to engage with the vaccination process.

If those other places want to curtail their rights in the same way that Aucklanders have then perhaps they should be welcome to request a Level 3 for Xmas with no mixing of families and no travel like Auckland has been dealing with until vaccination rates get up.

Otherwise it seems like a case of wanting to have your cake and eat it too. And at some point, it's going to happen anyway. There's no credible alternative. The rest of NZ has had plenty of time and warning.

People seem much more motivated to get vaccinated when the virus pops up in their community. Perhaps we need a staged relaxing of the Auckland border between now and Christmas in order to create a 'slow leak'.

That way we wouldn't have the virus dramatically bursting out of Auckland a few days before Christmas, with many people across the rest of the country having been complacent up to that point.
