Non NZ citizens who have been through or from China are now banned from entering NZ.

Also no more e-gates for a while. All visitors must be manually screened by customs.

This policy will be reviewed every 48hrs and is expected to be in place for upto 14 days according to the article.

Interestingly the spin on this includes protecting our pacific neighbours.

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...

So at least one of my suspicions has now been confirmed - it seems that the definition of 'suspected case' did indeed include a proviso that the person had travelled from Hubei/Wuhan.

Today's update on the Ministry of Health website confirms this.

So, any case where the person did not travel from Hubei province/Wuhan, would not have, prior to Feb 3, been treated as a suspected case.

So anyone travelling from any of the other Chinese provinces, symptoms or not, would not have been classified a 'suspected case' - and presumably as a result would not have been screened, stopped or tested - and subsequently could merrily be spreading the virus around New Zealand as you read this.

Change to case definition

A decision has been made by the Ministry of Health to expand the case definition for suspected cases of novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV). We are currently updating our resources for health care professionals following the change to the case definition.

The travel history will now include those who have been in mainland China, within the last 14 days. Previously it only included people who had travelled to and from Hubei province in China, particularly Wuhan.

At 04:00 on February 2nd, 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps reported 2829 newly diagnosed cases (2103 cases in Hubei Province) and 186 new severe cases (139 cases in Hubei Province). There were 57 more deaths (56 in Hubei Province and 1 in Chongqing City), 147 newly cured cases (80 in Hubei Province), and 5173 new suspected cases (3260 Hubei Province).
　　As of 24:00 on February 2, the National Health and Health Commission has received a total of 17,205 confirmed cases (31 cases in Beijing and 1 case in Jiangxi Province) of confirmed cases in 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities) and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. There were 2296 cases, a total of 361 deaths, a total of 475 cases cured and discharged, and a total of 21,558 suspected cases.
　　At present, 1,895,83 close contacts have been traced. Of the 1,055 medical observations released on the day, a total of 152,700 people are receiving medical observations.
　　A total of 33 confirmed cases were reported from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan: 15 from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, 8 from the Macao Special Administrative Region, and 10 from Taiwan.

Even my partner said that China had been complaining over the last couple of years that their 1 child policy had worked to well and now they have a huge ageing population which they can not afford - soooooo - Coronavirus's do tend to hit the elderly the hardest.

Side effects in AU apparently:

"A nurse friend of mine works on the health advice hotline. Had multiple cases over the last couple of days in which he gave advice to the caller to see a GP only for the caller to reveal that they had attempted to do so and were refused. Had to send them to emergency."

GP's apparently refusing to see patients with any overseas history no matter their issue

Forestry crews across New Zealand have downed tools as contractors close operations due to the coronavirus.

Logging workers who contacted Stuff said they were told to go home and that the shutdown was affecting crews across the country.

Oops - that's about $300 million a month of exports.

Here's a Qantas 747 charter flight, evacuating Aus (& some NZ?) citizens from Wuhan to Learmonth Airport (never heard of it) in WA, then I presume the Aussies get shuffled to Christmas Island.

Wait - I smell a conspiracy theory brewing - if it's heading to WA, then they appear to be lost. It seems to be headed to Sydney.
