A friends daughter in law, has been a vocal antivaxxer. My friends son, was not against the vaccine. So anyway, this family of five, have all gone all unvaccinated, because one person, rules the roost generally in that house hold.

This has created a chunk of tension since my friend has significant comorbidities.

Anyway, long story short, the daughter in law now has two relatives who are very ill, one is in hospital. So now she has raced off and got herself vaccinated.

My friend in good faith has decided to go ahead with the Xmas get together, even though this family will not be fully vaccinated, and even though the mother in that family, clearly has Covid in her circle.

These are the sacrifices good people are being forced to make, taking risks, to reward someone who got one jab, when really that person was not interested in looking after anyone else, and came to the light via pure selfishness.

It seems to be (well, I get the impression) that it's only when it impacts an antivaxxer that they might do something about it, ie, get the vaccine. Until then, it's "someone else's problem".

With this normal caveat that this is Monday data, so impact by weekend testing volumes:

- It seems the growth rate in daily case numbers is falling. Numbers still increasing, but the last few days seem to have broken away from aggressive exponential growth trend.

- Numbers in hospital, ICU, Ventilated are starting to rise.

For NZ MIQ.

Yesterdays announcements border cases:

And the Prior day:

Up to 13 confirmed omicron border cases.

Of interest:

  • Numbers of border cases in general seem really high.
  • UAE as transit seems to feature a worrying amount (all different dates to, so not just an infected flight)

I stand by my prior prediction that we are unlikely to make it to Feb 2022 without omicron in the community.

My very rough calculation put the mean time between MIQ leaks at just 12.5 days... Hope I am wrong on that one.

But I recommend people be ready for Omicron. If that means stock pilling baking ingredients etc. do it now before supply chains are stretched.

From media coverage, it sounds like a formal reduction in spacing to the booster will be announced early next week.

Cabinet is meeting today (Monday) would expect the booster announcement directly after the meeting,

Also possibly 5-11 approval ,

Would also expect a big hint at what is happening with the 17th Jan self isolation date too,

Pretty much everyone of the "talking heads" over the last week has said you cannot have only self isolation at home with Omicron... and the border easing for NZ travellers from OZ should be shoved out to Feb, until it is clearer wat is going on in OZ

That's a bit meaningless. You could have 10 escape on the first day, 20 on the second day and using your stat no more for a year.

AFAIK we haven't had any 'escapees' for a while.

As I said before. "Pro-choice" moves the debate, uses a name that's already linked with civil liberties even though abortion and vaccination are in completely different leagues. It is a just a way for people to say "I am not anti-vaxxer but..."

Talking with a friend in NSW, there are stories of one in five restaurant bookings being cancelled, a lot of flight bookings are being cancelled.

There will be some human behavior in the apparent slowing of the omicron surge for now, people tend to pull back hard when a new variant enters, omicron has done so dramatically.

I also suspect, that since those vaccine rates are so incredibly high, that a number of people who are vaccinated are infected, and do not even know it...or are so mild that they have no motivation to do the test thing.

We do seem to be seeing a trend in rising hospitalizations around the world...which is a little concerning.

I should have described the article as how the phrase pro-choice has been bent out of shape to fit the antis agenda.

I did my shop last week. The usual items, things that go silly once the Omicron dreaded announcement comes.

But this time I also boosted our overall supplies for supply chain gaps as people get this flu effect from omicron double jabbed and need a stint off work.

I also bought 100 paracetomol and brufen (I am not recommending this for anyone, these are medicines that are safe for me to take, everyone is different) so enough tabs for the whole household. And a couple of bottles of isotonic sports drinks for everyone.

People tend to focus on the respiratory symptoms of covid. But stories of kids getting G.I. tract, tummy aches, nausea vomiting diarrhea, may mean you need a supplementary electrolyte replacement even like Lucozaide for example for kids. None of these drinks should be used as a total replacement for water intake.

Clearly the fever element can make having fluids quite critical in terms of how you feel, and this extreme fatigue where people say they are stuck in bed like Duncan Garner reported with his covid episode.

It is very easy to become dehydrated when your mobility to get up and your sweat loss are happening in combination.

Most of us won't need to change anything if we get Covid, it will be like a cold for many, I just prefer to have a little extra comfort since ordinarily, Flu's don't take out everyone in the house all at once in my experience, there is always someone doing well, covid is a little different.

I have a friend who genuinely believes that the government is evil and that establishment media are part of a vast conspiracy to frighten people into submission. The virus? It's a hoax to scare people. Same with the Christchurch shootings. Same with the supermarket stabber. All fake stories to keep people afraid and make them submit to vaccination.

Once someone buys into this argument, they use circular reasoning to 'prove' whatever it is they believe. It is just like religious nuts using the bible. If you believe the bible actually is the literal word of god, then you believe everything written in it must be the literal truth. If you believe the virus is a hoax, then every fact and argument disproving that is just part of the fake news. Nothing can change their mind because it is all part of the plot.

What in the hell can you do with an otherwise decent person who has been swallowed up by this crap? I sure don't know.

anti-vaxxers:

"My body, my choice"

is the poppycock that riles me most.  Do these wombles really not understand that the 'choice' they're making isn't just about their body, it has the potential to affect the body of everyone that they come within a couple of metres of.😡

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Small steps,

How do they function.... do they use money ??

Find little areas that directly impact them that you can show that the govt is not evil.

Trying to justify the NZ govt is evil is fairly hard when its providing universal hospital care and National superannuation payments to pretty much every one over 65..

I can't speak for her but I would imagine she might say that is part of the plot to lull people into a false sense of security. Anything can be turned around to prove the opposite once you go down that particular rabbit hole. I know. I have had these discussions with her.
