On the 3057 cases in NSW today..

"Prime Minister Scott Morrison has reiterated that Australia will not return to lockdowns as coronavirus infections rise across the country, insisting that “the time for that heavy-handedness is behind us”.

Speaking at a press conference in Queensland this morning, Mr Morrison said a “strong recommendation” to wear masks in indoor settings was “very sensible” but added that “Australians don’t have to be told by governments how to live”.

ezbee:

Good news on the 28 cases, but one in Murapara , least vaccinated area of NZ.

Tests yesterday are down, how many people will get a test this close to Xmas for fear of any backlash/isolation/causing visiting issues? Id probably wait till 10 days after New Year's and see how it has unfolded

I can't see the government changing their plans for opening up now as they can see from other countries that omicron can overcome just about any restrictions anyway.

And it would be hugely unpopular with all those Kiwis in Aus who have already made plans to come back after Jan 17 and others around the world who are coming back when MIQ ends for them on Feb 14th.

The government will just keep plugging the vaccination line and quoting figures to show how well vaccinated/protected we are.

Not so sure.

If Omicron is yet to breach MIQ in early Jan, I would not be surprised if they delay it. I think we are still a couple of weeks away from more useful data on the virulence of Omicron that will play into any decision making. If it does show in places like the UK to be less severe, to the point where even at the infectiousness it appears to have the health system can cope, things may go ahead.

But if it breaches MIQ and is already in the community, which IMO is only a matter of time (MIQ is already leaky without a highly infectious variant in the mix), opening the border will pretty quickly become moot.

Self isolation from mid-Jan from OZ now pushed back to end of Feb,

MIQ moves from 7 days + 3 at home to 10 full days in MIQ ...

The fingers are being crossed we can boost enough before O'Cron arrives,

Gonna be lots of Grumpy kiwis in OZ, but probably outweighed by those in NZ given a bit more assurance

Well I see that Hipkins doesn't value my opinion.

MIQ free travel off until the end of Feb and MIQ stays extended to 10 days.

I'm surprised they have announced this now. They didn't need to yet. They could have advised caution and flagged the possibility of rules changing for those booking travel, but we're going to have much better data on Omicron virulence well before the changes come into effect.

If Omicron gets into the community anyway in the next couple of weeks (which I think is a very real possibility) then it's all pretty much moot.

PPTA should pressure the goverment, refuse to have unvaccinated children in class. Under the health and safety line  they was used to mandate vaccinations for teachers, Should now apply to students. No Vax, No school.

Not yet... the 4 months eligibility doesn't kick in till the new year (I think they said mid Jan for walk up and later via the Book My Vaccine site)

Overall I am pleased with the presser. Perhaps because the Govt have caught up with how to get out worst group for vaccines, into the conversation from the podium of power, in a way that is direct.

Very good to see the Maori Bloomfield saying this is your vaccine roll out, this is your kids, this is Maori telling you to get it done. To have that voice there up front from the beginning removes all the distance and disconnect between talking heads, the lectern and the man in the street.

I suspect the Red light plan will magically evaporate when A) micro lock downs no longer hold omicron and B) a 2.4 day rate of doubling time manifests.

At which juncture out will come the sledge hammer.

And that is fine. We are still talking about ways to respond up until a fixed point is reached, like say 88% tripple jabed and children in the 90% range.

Then we can go back, catch our breath, and wait for the next variant...which by the law of replication over populations and increased rates of speed....should be ready to throw something else at us inside three months to six months tops.

One would hope six months, or a bit longer, we would hope Covid realises it is winning and does not need to bash us hard with new sticks.

Just keep swimming...

The next thing that the odious fossil fuel toad will do...is to use mixed messaging "I got the shot...it was a beautiful shot...but you don't have to get it....It is about your rights...you could try it...I dunno...it might be alright"  - Donald Trump 2021

Wonder why the deferred start (Xmas off for vaccinators?).  Underway before the 5-11 rollout would seem to have made sense.
