I thought she became a doctor long before coronavirus came along?

I see all the episodes of her from the first season of that TV show (in 2019) are no longer viewable on TVNZ+. All the others - not featuring her - are available.

That feeds beautifully into the conspiracy narrative that people espousing alternative information are being suppressed. The decision makers at TV NZ are cowards and idiots. The way to combat misinformation is to provide good information, not to try to rewrite history. If they are so afraid what of she had to say, maybe she had a point.

ezbee: What amazes me is how would someone be able to pass exams and all the practical achievements etc.
That no red flags come up in training and residency.

It's not that hard to get taken down a rathole between your training time and real life.  For an example of this, watch "The Brainwashing of My Dad", there's a ten-minute version which doesn't get as sidetracked as the full-length docco but I can't find it at the moment.

Covid and the new mRNA technology allowed the crazies a wedge to run the line "this is not like you normal vaccines"

- because of the newness of the technology the rabbit hole was wide open and it gobbled up some people who quite happily accepted "traditional" vaccinations as being fine....

I don't think mRNA perceptions are largely to blame for the crazies...

We purchased a whole bunch of AstraZeneca. Only 7.5% of our order made it into people arms. More than 110,000 doses went to waste.

We also purchased a heap of Novavax. Unsure of how much made it into arm's, but 1.75m doses went to waste.

So when non mRNA vaccines were made available, It's not like the vaccine hesitant were lining up. (I still feel that offering these was the right policy move even if the wastage was massive).

I suspect some of the following happened:

  • People were using being "Anti this [mRNA] vaccine" as an excuse to seem less crazy, or as justification of how they turned out OK despite having their childhood vaccines. and were actually full antivax
  • When non mRNA vaccines became available, this triggered people to either look into the performance of the various vaccines, and spurred them to get Pfizer
  • People went further down the rabbit hole, and transitioned from anti mRNA vaccines to full antivax.

Sadly based on childhood vaccination rates I think the second option was less common...

I couldn't find a later graph, but the "All" figure now stars at 76.3%, so the downwards trend has continued.

Rather than throwing them out why weren't these vaccines offered to younger people, or health workers, when their use by date was approaching?

My daughter works in a hospital treating covid patients but couldn't get a vaccine because she was under 30. She eventually caught covid when it went through the staff.

Our Last AstraZeneca expired September 2022. Novavax even later.

At that point we had basically finished our rollout, and had abundant doses of the more effective Pfizer vaccine on hand.

Figure 2: Receipt of initial COVID-19 vaccination (percentage of population) by country. This line graph tracks the vaccination rate of the following countries, in order from highest to lowest coverage: Singapore, Taiwan, Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, United Kingdom, and Sweden. Aotearoa NZ's vaccination rate shows as just under 80% on this graph.

I think we got AstraZeneca and Novavax fairly late in the global vaccination process. Suspect we got more than a million Novavax doses due to an order we placed early in the pandemic (As a hedge that other orders we had placed wouldn't pan out).

Assume by the time we worked out we had excessive doses on hand (say 6 months before expiry), the world was fairy awash with vaccine availability.

While I hate to see waste, the only real option at that point would have been to donate them to a poor country. I think there are some ethical issues with that. Hey poor country... We are keeping all our Pfizer for ourselves, but you can have our less effective and also short dated vaccine doses....

Africa gets a lot of its vaccines that way, to some extent it's a dumping-ground for expired European vaccines.  I think the problem with redistributing the early Covid ones were the requirements for ultracold freezer storage and then careful control after they were thawed for use.

This page shows that for the influenza vaccine in 2024, only 5% of children 6 months - 12 years received it. Of course, you have to pay for it. But it gives an indication of how few people are willing to pay for vaccine. I have gladly paid for all three of my children to get the flu vax every year they've been alive.

Is there still a daily/weekly dose graph. I bet that's tanked.

Got the new version in feb and you can't even go using it as a talking point or remind / encourage other people without being questioned 'why' among other things anymore.

Despite the increased numbers and concern in the health industry. It's turned taboo to even mention now.

Shame.

Hardly anyone I know is getting the Covid vax now. I’d get it if it prevented infection but if it only mitigates then there’s no point for me. As far as I’m aware I’ve caught it twice ever, reasonably mildly. Once under current vaccination and once out.

Different for people with health issues.

Why is a reasonable question if you do bring it up and I’m sure you’ve got a reasonable answer.

I don’t know why people get upset about this. It’s a personal choice.

Misunderstood. They ask ME why I 'bothered' or did so. You know. It totally doesn't exist anymore. And anyone who chooses to is a moron because they're wasting their time sort of thing if choosing to keep up to date

If I drew a 150m circle around our place 4 people in last month have tested +ve. Youngest (50s?) had worst immediate symptoms, oldest (80) still not fit enough to leave house.

My wife and I are over 60's, haven't had covid, and will keep getting the vaccine as long as it is available. We also get the flu jabs.
