GV27:

This seems to be a common experience across my professional friends. Lids have sunk, replacements are not happening, workloads are increasing by 20% - 100% and there is no opportunity to take time off for family or holidays because the workflow risks of falling behind are terrifying.

This is something that I have started noticing too. Meeting up with friends or establishing new friendships has become incredibly difficult in the last couple of years as everyone is just so busy and distracted. It's particularly hard when you live alone.

In order to stay socially connected I have made a point of being in places where I incidentally see people who I know rather than having to rely on arrangements to meet up. Things like limiting working from home, getting to know neighbours and attending events like Parkrun have been helpful for me.

This, for sure.  Joining a group or club with common interests gives a reason to go do things with people as opposed to trying to arrange a specific catchup.

As I’ve gotten older and more senior in the business my level of giving a sh*t about the business not resourcing things properly has really dropped.

I tell the business what we need to do things properly. If the business chooses not to listen to me I’m pretty comfortable to push back and tell the person who made the decision that it’s their problem to solve if stuff doesn’t get done.

I acknowledge that I’m in a very fortunate position of being relatively senior in a well run organisation with significant resources that generally doesn’t punish someone for speaking up. I’m not going to get sacked for saying what I think, and our organisation has significant resource, which unfortunately isn’t the case for everyone.

no doubt work security is an issue for many. i've been made redundant twice in the last 12 months.

however on the bright side there is still good people out there working hard to make business happen so we all do better.

Wow, that's really rough, I am so sorry to hear that. Hopefully, you find something soon, if you haven't already.

I'm in the fortunate position to work in a place where I enjoy and get on really well with my colleagues, so this helps heaps. It is tough though to know that friends that you have known for many years are simply drifting away due to a lack of interest or  the "Let's catch up next week" that never comes. As a 50 year old, I find it harder and harder to make new friends, so forcing myself out into situations where I don't have a choice but to is important. Parkrun is one, as well as other running events, home brew making and judging, volunteering for charitable organisations etc etc helps me meet like minded people. So far so good.
