mattwnz: People should be at home now as per the government's COVID 19 advert on this page. Stay Home.

It's not a "government's COVID 19 advert". I am not being paid. I put the images on all pages because it is the most important thing now.

Do you disagree with Jacinda's decision to allow people living alone to have contact with one other person from outside their household?

I think it is a sensible compromise, and hopefully people will use it in the spirit that was intended.

No. Stay at home. How is this hard to understand? Stay at home. Three simple single-syllable words. Stay at home.

How about you let the authorities decide what people should do. This specific case has been addressed by the government and you are providing advice contrary to theirs.

I forget if she stated or implied that there will be harsher measures such as quarantine when numbers reduce.

Yes, there'll be quarantine - either at hotels or the same installations previously used for isolation.

Every freaking greedy bastard and his dog are now self-proclaiming "essential service and we will be open". You just need to have a chewing gum in your stock list to think you can remain open. Idiots. I hope they get caught.

I *think* that's for arrivals that show symptoms, are determined to be at risk through contact etc, or are not able to prove that they have made arrangements for self-isolation.  Others may be able to self-isolate as previously required.

(That's the best I can glean from what I've seen/heard explained in the news, but I can't find a link to anything official yet to confirm it as fact / policy - I wish I could post a useful link - but not yet)

This thread seems to be derailing into a witch hunt about what shouldn't be open.. how about letting the Government/Police/whatever authority deal with that and just focus on what you can control instead?

It's obvious from other countries that people don't take the lock down seriously, so we just have to hope the action is swift from the authorities

You only needed to drive around Wellington today to see the amount of people not practising things like social distancing, or acting as if everything is normal right now. At Thorndon New World they weren't even keeping numbers in store at a reasonable level, it was just a free for all with checkouts packed and lines for Africa. I went in, saw what was happening and left..

Conversely at Karori New World and Countdown they were restricting numbers in store, with crosses marking 2 meters from each other.. same with Common Sense organics in CBD (but not Kilbirnie)

I was trying to find Rye flour but it seems everyone has hoarded flour now as there was no flour at all across multiple supermarkets I tried -_-

the local New World is now restricting how many people are allowed in the store for safety reasons , so now there is a queue of 30-50 people most a foot apart waiting to get in , Great isolating people and New World

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Yes its quite funny, as Karori the space between the two separate lines (one for Countdown and another for New World) is less than a meter apart.. can't wait till that becomes a single supermarket instead of two small ones

Here's my variation on the @ben28 prediction:

a/ We stay at level 4 for a month with practically *no* incoming passengers

b/ Further level 4 time assessed, weeks if all is looking good, months otherwise

c/ Once a region is down to zero, it goes back to level 3 or 2, with "border guards" to prevent re-infection from outside. If re-infection happens, it's back to level 4.

d/ The economy returns to more normal, and incoming flights allowed, with 14 days quarantine for all passengers

e/ We stay like that until enough New Zealanders get vaccinated or a drug is found that is effective. And that's probably 18 months at least.

I can't see the current PM saying ' the economy is more important, I know this decision will cost X lives'

But we do still have an election in September.

Same at my local Countdown (since yesterday).  My local pharmacy and bakery have an "only one customer in store at a time" policy.  It seems to be working fine.  I picked up a prescription for my wife.  Minimise contact again - asked the Dr to fax the script through - there's no need to enter the surgery to pick up a paper script, so then there's one less possible exposure route for me - and for everybody else.

That's it - I should be fine not going out at all for a week.  Will be on milk made from powder for my morning cappuccino - one of the things I forgot to test before I committed to it.

There was plenty of tucker at the supermarket - shelves were well-stocked, plenty of fresh produce.

You need a president for that, apparently.  Apart from the "I know this decision will cost X lives bit" - which a bit of prayer will fix.  If you're a genius, you don't need expert advice - particularly if it runs counter to your world view (and personal greed).

it's funny how the government was so over the top with the evacuees from wuhan, flying them in on a charter plane, putting them in an isolated base, etc.

Then a week later, calls all NZers to return home, and DIY isolation. And you get a pamphlet explaining it at the airport, if you're lucky.

I call BS on that. This is life and death -- everyone should, of course, focus on what they can primarily control the most, i.e. what they can do. But some of the entities that are obviously and flagrantly putting a bit of stinking lucre above others' well-being are playing with lives. No one here has threatened any vigilante action -- they are rightly expressing contempt and concern. And you should stop accusing people of doing what they aren't.

Not that many people in the veggie shop in the Karori Mall which was my preference to avoid Qs.

Always the optimist, @freitasm! Some stooopids are going to try it on right after midnight just to show how 'clever' they are.

BTW, in view of "On Wednesday 23 March, the Prime Minister issued an Epidemic Notice under section 5 of the Epidemic Preparedness Act 2006" [https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and-conditions/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-epidemic-notice] and "The Minister of Civil Defence, Peeni Henare, has declared a state of national emergency over the Covid-19 pandemic" [https://www.newsroom.co.nz/2020/03/25/1099856/state-of-national-emergency-declared

I recommend that everyone reads this most excellent article at The Spinoff, follows the links and finds out just how broad and draconian are the powers that the government has given itself.

😬

Do those powers apply when the government issued the notice on a day that doesn't exist? There is no Wednesday 23rd March.
