the local New World is now restricting how many people are allowed in the store for safety reasons , so now there is a queue of 30-50 people most a foot apart waiting to get in , Great isolating people and New World

I hope you are being sarcastic.  I foot is too close. This is how community transmission spreads. New World should be enforcing a two meter separation in the line.  Any one how disregards the gap should be bared from entering.

Am I the only one who would have preferred that The warehouse remained open, so there are more places to get essentials from, and hence less queues.  Most people on this forum seem to think that the virus spread is proportional to the number of shops open.  It is not.  It is proportional to the density of customers.  More shops open  for essentials -> greater separation of customers -> less spread of the virus.

The warehouse only carries a limited range of groceries.  The risk was deemed higher than the benefit of spreading the customers amongst a number of shops.

As is shown above, the stores still haven't got it and aren't controlling the queues outside to a safe separation distance.  We should be reporting these unsafe practices to the enforcement agencies as they are putting all of us at risk.

The emergency alert just came through, at least on Android listed as a "Presidential alert". Can't have come from him though, it made sense.

Surprised it doesn’t have a tone that ignores the mute switch on my phone.

from the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (the "doomsday clock" folks):

"Black plague, Spanish flu, smallpox: All hold lessons for coronavirus"

As the novel coronavirus has spread, so too have a flurry of myths and disinformation about it, often perpetuated by mainstream and social media. Many of these myths are medical. For example, although wearing a surgical mask will not protect you from contracting the illness—viruses are too small to be screened out—healthy people around the world have rushed to buy them.

But the myths are also social. A perfect example is the false assertion that the coronavirus emerged because a Chinese woman in Wuhan ate bat soup. (Though bats may have been the source of the virus, the video that purportedly substantiates the claim was filmed in the South Pacific island of Palau, not China, for the popular online travel show of a Chinese video blogger named Wang Mengyun.)

Although public health experts have worked hard to debunk many of these myths, popular history can also be a valuable tool for putting the outbreak in context, dispelling untruths, and allaying fears among a wider public. The history of the Black Death, the Spanish flu, and smallpox all hold valuable lessons.

In my case it will be someone who lives alone interacting with someone else who lives alone. I think that was the prime minister's intention, although she may not have been explicit about that.

What would someone who is visiting NZ and was staying in the Sofitel tonight be expected to do if they can’t afford to stay there for 4 weeks?

it's funny how the government was so over the top with the evacuees from wuhan, flying them in on a charter plane, putting them in an isolated base, etc.

Then a week later, calls all NZers to return home, and DIY isolation. And you get a pamphlet explaining it at the airport, if you're lucky.

Your point is?

Canterbury was used as an example on the news tonight of things to come. It's been a ghost town CBD since Monday.

I was surprised by my attempt to do a sugar/headache stop at the supermarket at the airport today. There still seemed to be fresh imported tourists (sigh) but the limited in/out was in effect and the majority of people got the idea about spacing

Looks like couriers will not only be delivering  essential items. Major move. This means if you are selling things online from you home, and they aren't essential items, there isn't really a way to get it to the buyer

Thinking of crowdsourcing some wooden Clue Bats. Made from a piece of 2x4, turned wooden handle, and the letters "C L U E" embossed into the side. That way you can give someone a clue whenever they say:

"It's only the flu"

"I'm just popping out to the shops for a bit"

Repeat anything Trump says about it

etc

Geektastic: When do you think we needed to close the border to have been the only place entirely free of the virus?

26 Jan would have solved it, in every country in the world. It would have. Thats the view of the hindsight fortune tellers here. And ignore Kiwis. No one dod that, neither did we. Where are we at? 201 cases , isolated. 4 CT's. No deaths. I believe no ICU used. 6 have been hospitalised. We are well ahead of it.

I am sure this has been mentioned in previous posts but the thread is getting pretty long now. What if any plans are in place for the homeless I am sure there are but I cannot see anything being mentioned about them.

Police and the Defence Force were working with agencies to help people in emergency homes and homeless people - and others who may not have a safe place to self-isolate.
