As I said on Twitter yesterday. People going out in a hurry to hang out with friends, drinking the last one at pubs is an example.

It is not like the virus was dormant until 25 March 23:59 pm. That was the moment everyone had to stop and reset. Up until then the virus was very much active and you wouldn't know it. So many idiots cramming into bars, liquor stores and other places. Unbelievable.

Now if the banks were willing to suspend interest liability on loans that would be a different case entirely.

Contrary to opinions like this, we are acutely aware of the pain our customers are going through and are not rubbing our hands in glee at the extra income we might get from someone taking a mortgage payment deferral.

We (BNZ) are giving customers 3 options, if they are employed but are on reduced income or receiving govt subsidy:

Reduced principal & interest payments for up to 6 months. Example: customer says I can only afford X
Interest only payments for up to 12 months
Home loan repayment 'holiday' for up to 6 months.

We are working very hard with a huge number of customers to help keep them going, both personal and business banking which I am involved with. People working around the clock, regulatory requirements are being worked around to speed things up etc...

We care a lot about our customers.

Touche. I don't work at a bank but they clearly and quickly became part and parcel of the support network for Kiwis.

I am glad to read this. We are assured at the moment that this is a health crisis, not a banking one, so the reputation of how the banks treat their customers will be made or broken over the next 6 months.

With interest rates so low it will be reputation that draws customers in.

one council had already banned people removing the flags on golf courses prior to the lockdown as it was an identified risk. It is similar to playgrounds and park benches which they have warnedabout. Whoever is playing golf on a public course during lockdown should be reported IMO. They risk extending the lockdown for everyone. What part of "stay at home" don't people understand
