There seems to be some confusion about when and where you are able to drive your car. For example, can you drive to the nearest beach assuming it's only about 10km away?

Or can you drive from home to the nearest aquifer to fill up your water bottles, assuming this is about 5km from home?

Sure, you can drive to the supermarket or dairy or pharmacy, but does it have to be to the nearest ones to where you live?

Here's Police Commissioner Mike Bush talking about these issues, he seems to think you can't drive to the beach or park for some fresh air:

https://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/on-air/christchurch/canterbury-mornings-with-chris-lynch/audio/mike-bush-warns-people-against-leaving-their-houses-during-lockdown/

From the above:

Don't even think about driving to the beach or a park for some fresh air once the lockdown starts. That's the message from police commissioner Mike Bush, who told NewstalkZB host Chris Lynch that people should only go out in their cars to get essential supplies.

"What happens if somebody wants to go for a drive, say to a local beach or get out and about to a local park?" Lynch asked. "Are they in a position to drive there?"

"There's a short answer to that - no they're not," replied Bush. "You only go out in your vehicle if you need to go and get essential food supplies, essential medical supplies or medical treatment. Otherwise, please stay at home."

And this one, also on Newstalk ZB:

https://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/on-air/mike-hosking-breakfast/audio/mike-bush-police-finding-people-on-street-who-arent-aware-of-lockdown/

When asked how police would enforce the rules and make sure those out and about were out for a good reason, he said police officers may follow you.

"If they've got a good reason - if they're an essential worker or if they're going to the supermarket or if they're going to get food or health supplies - that's fine.

"If not, stay at home. That's how you're going to save lives."

'WE MAY HAVE A DRIVE...TO SEE WHERE YOU'RE GOING'

He said officers would have a fair idea of whether or not someone was going to the supermarket.

"We may even have a little drive with you to see where you're going."

Stay at home. What are you not getting?

Don't worry I fully understand that message, but what I don't get at home is a walk in fresh air, after all, I'm not in prison! The confusion arises because I'm sure the PM said it was OK to drive short distances to a suitable place to go for a walk and exercise the kids and dogs etc. But the Police seem to disagree with this.

If I live next door to a park, it's OK to walk from home to the park and exercise there, provided I don't touch any playground equipment. If this is not OK, then all parks should be officially closed, which hasn't happened.

So, if it's OK to walk say 1km to a park, what's the problem with driving say 8km to this same park if you live that bit further away? You are either able to leave home for a walk in a nearby park or not, I can't see why you can only walk to it and not drive to it. Perhaps someone can explain the Police's reasoning behind this?

Did not realise the State of Emergency had activated the units. It makes sense as our Defence Force isn't the biggest around. My son has just confirmed for me as I type this. My apologies for my mistake.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Less cars on the road make it easier for the Police to do the Policing.

mattwnz: one council had already banned people removing the flags on golf courses prior to the lockdown as it was an identified risk. It is similar to playgrounds and park benches which they have warnedabout. Whoever is playing golf on a public course during lockdown should be reported IMO. They risk extending the lockdown for everyone. What part of "stay at home" don't people understand

Prior to, my club stated that no one touches the pins, or the ball washers. The day or so before the Level 4 commenced, they updated that to the course will be closed, get your clubs before 11-59 Wed if they are in storage and you want them. This will be nationwide. The way golf runs in NZ, Golf NZ is the overall overseeing body. The few Public courses should at least be signposted

You say you understand the message but it seems like you don't, so I'll repeat it. Stay at home.

Mosy houses have footpaths, they work well for walking. Stay local is quite clear

All we need to do is have solidarity with each other and support each other while we are in isolation.  We don't need vectors of new infection out there as though they're on a spring break or Rubella party.

This is all about crowd control.  Once someone thinks they can drive to the local park, so will everyone else.

Everyone needs to be in the same ball park at 2 m separation.  The PM may not have given the exact precise message but the police will understand and enforce.

My own golf course shut their doors to the member and public on Monday so that the green staff could use the next two days to prepare the course for a long period of no maintenance. Absolutely the right thing to do but they got absolutely lambasted for it by the selfish few who wanted to get that last round in.

Being quite cynical I would imagine the banks will be only too happy to cater for Mortgage Repayment Holidays as the interest will continue to be added to the principal bringing them more interest in the future.

Now if the banks were willing to suspend interest liability on loans that would be a different case entirely.

Contrary to opinions like this, we are acutely aware of the pain our customers are going through and are not rubbing our hands in glee at the extra income we might get from someone taking a mortgage payment deferral.

We (BNZ) are giving customers 3 options, if they are employed but are on reduced income or receiving govt subsidy:

  • Reduced principal & interest payments for up to 6 months. Example: customer says I can only afford X
  • Interest only payments for up to 12 months
  • Home loan repayment 'holiday' for up to 6 months.

We are working very hard with a huge number of customers to help keep them going, both personal and business banking which I am involved with. People working around the clock, regulatory requirements are being worked around to speed things up etc...

We care a lot about our customers.

I would hope that there isn't any 'extra income' for banks arising from all this. Surely the change in receipt of income is only a timing difference?

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

The PM and the Police Commissioner need to get on the same page. Confusion will lead to tragedy.

I heard the PM also say that you could ride your bike for some exercise but that is against the point of isolation to enable easier contact tracing.

It should be no bikes, roller skates, jet packs, scooters, motorized wheelchairs etc.

Until we have something like Sg's Bluetooth contact tracker we need to stay close to home

gchiu: NZ like many countries runs a hospital system that is always at peak capacity. That's why when winter comes the hospitals are full and beds flow into corridors etc. There is no extra capacity to handle a pandemic. I presume it's the way hospitals are funded. You don't have money to run a hospital with empty beds, and staff with little to do except be there there when required. Everyone needs a full time job. It's just health economics.

Can't they reduce demand and increase capacity by cancelling elective surgery? I know someone's effectivesurgery that had been cancelled due to this.
