The process to name the disease and virus is becoming a comedy show.

Taiwan has now said that they're sticking with "Wuhan virus", the virus is officially SARS-CoV-2 which really doesn't tie in automatically with Covid-19 as the disease, I keep calling it nCoV-2019 because I'm used to doing so, and the Chinese are now calling the disease something else entirely (NCP?).

For goodness sake - humans are their own worst enemy.

I wonder how much effect public inconvenience will have on this. An alert on my phone had an article along the lines of "even prisoners get outside" referring to a cruise ship. A quarantine is a quarantine or its not, IMO.

From the Herald today: "Four Filipino children who have never been to China have been told to stay away from their Papakura primary school".

That is not how it works, New Zealand. This is just racism.

FFS it doesn't taken much for racist pricks to become openly public

The MWC Barcelona (Mobile World Congress) has just been cancelled - after Facebook, Nokia, Vodafone, BT, LG, AT&T, Sprint, Intel, Ericsson and others have pulled out.

A major client of mine (large domestic NZ) has put a blanket ban on all business travel (either int or dom). So any conferences/major events anywhere in the world are likely to be heavily impacted.

Whoever made that decision is simply uneducated and should not be holding any leadership positions.

Reading the story PacNSav is out of line too:

"But her husband Ronnel Botor, a seafood manager at Pak'nSave Clendon, was surprised when his boss told him to go home for 14 days too."

NZ Should Prepare for a Potentially Severe Global Coronavirus Pandemic

Posted on February 6, 2020 by Nick Wilson

Prof Nick Wilson, Prof Michael Baker

In this blog we briefly summarise our assessment of the highly uncertain new coronavirus threat. Given its potential to become a severe and prolonged global pandemic, a precautionary response now means activating all components of our pandemic plan, with a particular focus on ‘keep it out’. NZ has many natural and institutional advantages in managing this major health and economic threat. Now is the time for maximum proactivity.

I wonder if Pak'nSave Clendon is going to pay his salary for their decision to quarantined him. The article hints that it hasn't:

"The owner of my wife's store called the owner of my store and said I was quarantined," he said. "It's not fair for us, it's not fair for the children."

TBH, I'd want customs/government/any authority in NZ to advice all incoming passengers from anywhere in the world to take self controlled 14 days quarantine (who bloody knows who was next to arriving passenger on the plane and where that fellow passenger arrived from to take flight to NZ). There should be official statement and if leave needs to be taken - this should become sick leave.

I don't think it's racist to ask everyone to be aware they might be infected.

There is a reported case from China of a Chinese tourist who visited Bali on Jan 22, then returned to Shanghai on the 28th, then began showing symptoms 8 days after returning to China. (Jakarta Post article).

He had flown from Wuhan - so probably already had the infection before he travelled.

If the article is correct (big ?) then he wasn't diagnosed in Shanghai but in Huainan, he probably wasn't able to return to Hubei/Wuhan. With incubation period of 2-10 days or 2-14 days (WHO and US CDC) or possibly 2-24 days (preview paper from China awaiting peer review), then that gives an idea of how complex contact tracing etc for just one confirmed case can be, and once there are many confirmed cases and growing, then the task becomes effectively impossible.

A letter I saw  was that it comes out of annual Leave. Not Pak & Save, but guessing that’ll be companies view across NZ

Also if I picked it up right manager had to approve, cough cough.

Then there’s the Sky City story.

Fred99:

...they're isolating them together in bulk rather than sending them home.

I'd say that would pretty much guarantee that every suspected case would become an actual case within a couple of weeks. And a death sentence for 3%.

As you say, it's a big incentive to avoid being labelled as "suspected".
