I'm not very happy with a lot of the stuff I've read either. There's some horrific misinformation, conspiracy theory, racist BS being circulated on FB etc. So much for Zuck saying he'd filter out fake news and BS. He lied.

Just note that according to our MoH, there are only 7 Covid 19 patients currently in NZ hospitals, so while there may be a shortage of masks right now, it's probably not as dire as may be being made out by some people. We make them in NZ, apparently.

with all the businesses shut down and everybody on the dole the govt can't get local manufacturers to sew pieces of fabric together? if one able person makes one piece a day you will have at least 1 million pieces a day.

an easier alternative is to produce telephone booth test boxes since we will be needing them forever.

If one able person makes one piece a day you will have one piece a day not a million. It would take one person a million days at that rate.

Apparently every worker in NZ is unemployed so he suggested using them. All a bit silly.

If they are having to do this in Canada....I suspect the same will be needed here in NZ.

The NZ gov is hardly going to come out and say anything negative about the supply they have or lack of.

Canadians coast to coast are stepping up in finding ways to produce much needed equipment for front-line workers.

I think you’ll find you can’t take industrial action during a declared emergency.

Edit: But the point is fair. Our emergency service workers are underpaid and undervalued and this period may go a way to showing that.

According to Andrew Bloomfield (Director General of Health) at the press conference on Tuesday, when asked "How are we off for PPE?", he said "Owing to good fortune, I mean good planning, we have onshore manufacturing of masks. The factory in Whanganui is increasing its production from 200,000 masks a day"

So we have a lot of domestic capacity for masks, no need for people to make their own at home

In that story I noted they were making washable covers for N95 masks so that you can supposedly extent the life time of the mask. Great idea in theory but would it not decrease air intake making it harder to breath. Then you would have to take fresh gloved hands to remove it and immediately place in detergent containing water. In my experience wearing these dam things you get a moisture build up inside so the actual mask of course would still have to be aired to dry out safely. It seems like a lot of bother for really only short term gain.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

My understanding is that placing these N95 masks in an oven at 70 C for 30 mins is enough to inactivate any virus and this without damaging the physical characteristics of the masks.
