Those photos are somewhat bleak. But I noticed most people are wearing masks which potentially make them look more bleak, although masks in some countries have been the norm for some time as part of everyday life. When I was in Japan, many people had masks, as they don't want to spread any cold or sniffle they may have. That could be one reason why their rates aren't too bad.

Supermarkets are putting up their prices for items and that is a conscious decision by them - at the very least government should be having a word at the highest level with the CEO's

 

Regulation and all that entails should be a last resort

 

 

Folks, read the explanation above which is from another thread. Supermarket promotions are not run by the supermarkets themselves. The suppliers/producers give the supermarkets guidance on prices, when to discount and how much. They pay for advertising, where to advertise even where on the store things should be during promotion.

 

If this is taken away, the supermarkets don't run the promotion.

 

Unless you have intricate insider knowledge - and can give evidence to me - then stop with the discussion now.

 

A family (in-law) member of mine owns a New World supermarket in Auckland, so will probably find out. Will be interesting to see how the store is doing and get their perspective on the lockdown etc.

Here, here's why: it's NOT ABOUT PROFIT, it's about saving literally tens of thousands of lives. This has moved beyond who will be the big winners and losers, it's a threat to public health. So we're not thinking about who is allowed to make money here, we're optimising for preventing the spread of a deadly infectious disease.

If this is the case, why are supermarkets not running at 0 profit?  This is a time when every other competing business has been forced to close.  How is it in the countries best interest for profiteering at supermarkets to occur?  Surely you agree they should remove their profit?

The problem is ICU beds... after our ICUs are full, 5% of infected people will die. If we have ICU beds available, only 1% die. So we could allow (say) Auckland to become infected and develop herd immunity, whilst maintaining infection-control "borders" between it and the rest of NZ. Allow open travel between Auckland and the rest of the world. When Auckland's ICUs are full, transport patients to ICUs in other hospitals around the country. When the demand for ICU beds from Auckland falls, remove the "border" between Auckland and Northland. Again, use the whole country's ICUs to treat patients from Northland. Repeat again for Waikato, BOP, etc, etc until the whole country has herd immunity.

 

 

 

 

Anyone know if the government has asked any local manufacturers to look into making  ventilators seriously? Countries like UK appear to have more ventilators per population than NZ has, and apparently 10,000 new ones are being order from Dyson for the UK . If Dyson can make them, and they basically make consumer fan and vacuum devices, I can't see why a NZ company couldn't make them considering ventilators aren't exactly new technology, they have been around for decades, and NZ does have a number 8 wire philosophy 

 

We won't be able to order new ventilators for six weeks but yeah not sure about manufacturing. As of Wednesday the Ministry of Health still didn't know how many we would need :/

We're pretty screwed with this level of planning which has been there from the start, not that you'd know it from those who are constantly singing the government's praises because they have literally no clue how bad things are going to get.

I don't believe it's been proved to be too late .. but we are soon going to find out.

And then we'll have a Commission of Enquiry as to what happened,   and that's assuming we have any legal people of sufficient status to run an enquiry left alive.

The way a business expresses how much it appreciates a worker is by paying them money. It's capitalism, not rocket science.

This hypocrite doesn't give a sh1t about his workers. Getting his next billion is more important than his supposed Christian values.

Are they saying that tithing will protect them as a certain NZ church is claiming?

Not certain if this has been mentioned but the numbers of road deaths & injuries should be down this year.  And other accidental deaths.

I completely share your sentiments. I know what i wanted done at the time. But I don't think even the other big party or any other politician would have done any better. If only we could turn back time.

we just have to go back a few hundred pages to see the response .. some people were objecting to us "knowing" more than the govt.

By saying people can go out to exercise, people are using this as a loophole to do all sorts of things. I have been watching a local subcontractor today driving to and from a new house he is getting built. But people have also also been going out playing cricket on the road, washing cars on the roadside etc. Have been many people cycling etc, someone did a 22km run in insta. I though it was supposed to be a short walk around the block and back inside. What part of stay at home are people having difficulty understanding?
