Handle9: That all sounds very nice and is fairly silly. It's of benefit to everyone for businesses that can continue to make reasonable profits to continue to do so. Profit allows them to pay their staff, pay their suppliers and moves money through the economy. This removes the burden from the taxpayer of paying their staff.

Supermarkets are going about their normal business in abnormal times. Profiteering is something else.

Sorry I should have said net profit, nobody is suggesting they should be making losses. The examples I have, and I did post but got no comment or response related to vegetables, with real world examples. The government has effectively removed competition within this market, and I believe that the supermarkets should move to reduce their net profit as the likes of market gardeners, butchers and other such examples have been closed.

Is $3.00 & $6.00 fair for something last week I paid $1.50 & $2.00 for respectively?

From an EX RNZAF technician perspective. Spot the glaring maintenance error of all those parked up aircraft in America. NONE have safety protective covers on any of their external orifices. Engine intakes, aircraft pitot tubes etc. I really hope they carry out a FULL & DETAILED external maintenance on those aircraft prior to flying again. Birds and insects love those sorts of orifices to make a home in.

Otherwise they could have an even bigger disaster on their hands.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Are supermarket workers getting hazard pay? I'd imagine their normal pay probably isn't that great (I'd assume minimum wage for many of them?), I wouldn't want to be in there at minimum wage at the moment.

Had not thought of that. Viet Nam use them a lot on their 2 to 3 wheel vehicles and open air buses and their toll is even lower than ours.

Any medical device has to go through rigorous testing and approval. A patient needs to know that whatever they are connected to won't harm them. Doctors need to know that whatever they connect to their patients won't harm them. You don't just put together something from number 8 wire and chewing gum and hope it all works.

The best I could see would be that an already approved design might be manufactured in NZ. But, if the IP was held by a capitalist, you can bet it wouldn't be cheap.

Wouldn't the declaration of a state of emergency override some of these things? In the UK they seem to have gotten around it by Dyson designing one. Maybe they are willing to share their design to the rest of the world? Ventilators have been around since the mid twentieth century, so not exactly hi tech in terms of the concept behind them.

No. Profit is what's left after paying staff. It is money that does NOT go back into the economy.

Does anyone think it would be useful to know how long the queues are at essential businesses like supermarkets and pharmacies before you head down there?

Seems like Google Maps could show this info, similar to traffic congestion. That would shorten queues and reduce everyone's risk of exposure.

Remember 368 reported cases not even close to the actual number of cases, due to asymptomatic & reporting lag. Having only 150 available ICU (last I checked), only a few thousand reported cases could be crunch time for doctors choosing patients to die. I'm not sure how Kiwis are going to react to that...

I guess that'll freee up a few ICU beds.

My read about the govt response (I refer to the system of govt rather than govt MPs): -

They are doing the right things but not fast enough. I think we have missed the boat on meaningful containment. If you know anything about sigmoid curves you can see where we are and where we are inevitably going.

I don't blame govt for being slow. That would be as fruitful as blaming a tortoise for being slow.

The system of govt is designed to be slow and not make rash decisions and senior people who work in govt are typically cowards who fear public backlash cowards. Govt is reactive, whereas you need to be proactive to beat corona. That is why we didn't go to L4 until a bunch of qualified people were screaming for it to happen.

Corona viruses as group have been around a long time. They have evolved to exploit how slowly humans react. Just have to ride it out until we have vaccine or herd immunity.

My definition of too late is reaching 120,000 dead.

Remember that all of those surgical theatres can convert their anaesthetic equipment to run as ventilators, and we have all the anaesthetists can run them.
