Have corona virus strains only ever existed in China?

Coronavirus are everywhere.

We were talking with an epidemiologist recently who studies Bovine coronavirus infections in feedlot cattle. Particularly the respiratory disease (shipping fever) that spreads through cattle when they're shipped from feedlot to feedlot..(the cattle equivalent of widebody jets)

Bovine coronavirus is closely related to the human coronavirus OC43 that causes the common cold, and - it's thought - may be the original source.

Betacoronaviruses such as bovine and SARS coronaviruses can infect other animal species, and have been shown to infect dogs, turkeys, wild ruminants like Sambar deer, waterbucks, giraffes, white-tailed deer - even Llama and Alpacas.

Thats what I thought, thanks. Made me wonder with the talk of Chinese having more immunity. As if coronaviruses don't exist elsewhere. IMO, any virus outbreak, irregardless of its type is an issue for everyone, as the animals that can carry a virus often exist in many countries.

2nd Death confirmed outside of China, Japan 80 year old women with no history of travel to China. Confirmed cases have hit 505 with 58 new, Again most coming from Cruise ships (44)

Genetic sequences of viruses isolated from the scaly animals are 99% similar to that of the circulating virus — but the work is yet to be formally published.

Pangolins are scaly creatures often used in traditional Chinese medicine.

Note that WHO doesn't recognise Taiwan, and SAR (Hong Kong/Macau) are included in their figures for "China". There has been one death in Hong Kong.

I'm deeply suspicious about the claim it was spread to humans from pangolins. The species has been in the news with horrific images of them being traded in bulk for fake "alternative medicine", kind of a mascot against the live (and dead) wild animal trade - as they're pretty cool things (IMO) and somewhat endangered. If the intent was to shame that trade to save pangolins - I'd expect it to backfire. People would probably shoot them on sight.

As there's no paper, pre-print or whatever, and just a claim that they found the RNA in pangolins, I'd take it with a grain of salt like many other so-called "scientific news" out of China. Even if it was found in the sample, it doesn't mean they were the vector / presumed intermediate host. It could have been a contaminated sample - or the pangolin could have been infected by human contact.

New Zealand Government press release 15 February 2020:

Temporary restrictions on travel from China will remain in place as a precautionary measure to protect against the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

The restrictions which prevent foreign nationals travelling from, or transiting through, mainland China from entering New Zealand have been extended for a further 8 days. This position will be reviewed every 48 hours.

New Zealand citizens, permanent residents and their immediate family returning to New Zealand will continue to be able to enter, but are being told to self-isolate for 14 days upon their return.

“New Zealand has not yet had a confirmed case of COVID-19 but this continues to be an evolving situation,” Health Minister Dr David Clark said.

“The health advice remains consistent – we must take a precautionary approach, and that is why the travel restrictions will continue in the short term.

“At every step our response to the coronavirus has been based on the best available science and health advice.

“Our border response is in line with Australia, the US and a range of other countries. It is a responsible approach to assist international efforts to contain this disease, and to protect New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

“Imposing travel restrictions is not a decision that was taken lightly, but in the end this is a matter of public health,” Dr Clark said.

My understanding is that the Wuhan wild meat market was illegal, before the breakout.

Also this month, I believe there's a complete ban on any wild meat sales in China.

However whether it's MDMA (Ecstasy/Molly) or pangolins, where there's a demand someone will fill it.

I understand the Wuhan wildlife market was worth millions.

I also heard that the only place in the markets where swabs (many) of surfaces etc tested positive were in the seafood section - not where live (non-seafood) animals were (legal or not).

So it's even possible that one person who was infected elsewhere spread the infection to the other people in the market - the sale of live or dead wild animals may have had nothing to do with it.

Yes, it is illegal, as is robbing dairies in NZ, but it happens.

I don't know if Mr Xi is necessarily as curious as you are.

Perhaps not. Many have been fired there, but maybe thats fake news as well. In any case NZ should be keeping it out, which we aren't. So while its fine to criticise them, and certainly thats often justified, but before we cut them down we should evaluate our own measures , which is pretty much zero. Despite stage one being Keep It Out.

I wouldn't say it's nothing, It's just nothing very visible to the general public. With the direct flight ban and screening taking place in Sydney/Singapore/Dubai and more there isn't much more that we can do at the border that wouldn't increase general anxiety. Considering the crap we're seeing so far it's more than justified to take a cautious escalating approach so as to not cause more public harm
