Talking about Covid with a work mate today. We've both come to the conclusion that with our job we'll almost definitely get Covid it's just a matter of how soon.

I'm terrified I may get it. I'm old and vulnerable, but what does that mean, really?

I think that provided you're appropriately vaccinated and are able to hunker down and restrict social interactions and visits to places like supermarkets you stand good chance of not catching Covid.

Geektastic: What strikes me as odd is that Omicron is assumed to be 'the end'

Nobody is really looking beyond that. The next one could be less nasty than Omicron. Or much worse than Delta......

That is why I wrote before - what if we see "Pi" coming out during winter?

People are really behaving like "oh, that's it, this is the last one"

i don't know what you guys are worried about

i can't wait to level up to boss level

The older you get the more compromised your immune system becomes. It’s not possible to give a definitive answer which isn’t helpful to reduce your anxiety.

At this point it’s a dangerous illness in the same way that bad influenza is a serious illness. For most vaccinated older people it’s potentially quite serious but not life threatening. That of course is not helpful if you are part of the small percentage of people which is affected very badly.

I hope this is a bit helpful. The shitty thing is no one can really give you a definitive answer, there are too many variables.

TLDR: you’ll probably be ok but maybe you won’t be if you are unlucky.

Don’t let fear overwhelm you. You can only do your best to mask and sanitise and maybe ask guests to use a mask. Remember people aren’t dropping on the street like flies from this and people that get it are generally through it in 10 days and less. I remember with Delta, reading of an Italian 100 year old who got it and survived.

Living has both risk and luck attached to it. We are not eternal and in the end something will get us. No point spoiling the years we have left worrying about what might never happen.

I’ve set a target of living to 95 and daily remind myself that’s my job description. Job confidence wanes some days but distraction is the best medicine.

Got boostered yesterday afternoon at the Auckland airport drive through, we drove straight in and had no cars in front of us, had a few come in behind though.

Quick and efficient so i do recommend going there if you are needing a shot.

After planning for weeks to visit Wellington mid-March to catch up with Geekzone friends (including some of the Mod team) for a Whisky or four, I've just made the difficult decision not to go. Elderly parents with lung issues, and increased risks and expenses haven't helped.

To say I'm gutted is a huge understatement. I haven't socialised in ~two years.

Not in a good space.

I am so sorry. It really sucks to have to keep missing out on things.  Is there something local you can do to try and off set some disappointment or a treat you can get yourself that will help you feel better?

Hang in there.

Cheers. For now I'll concentrate on continuing slowly with landscaping and gardening around the house, and try to spend some time on a largely neglected hobby (photography).

The recommendation now is that if you have symptoms you should have a RAT and then if it's negative, get a second RAT day 2. High false-negative rates mean you could have covid and get a negative result

I'm curious as why there's a stated high false negative rate. Is it because people aren't following the instructions correctly? I have to do them every day I go to work. I'd like to think they are reasonably accurate if done correctly.

I was supposed to be away at a Spyder weekend rally. Found out that the venue hotel allowed unvaccinated guests to stay although not to use the restaurant etc.

I decided it was too risky given my medical conditions etc even though I've had 3 shots.

Then had a battle with the venue because they didn't want to bend on their 30 day cancellation policy. I pointed out that they hadn't informed me that unvaccinated people would be on the premises until less than 30 days remained until my arrival. They replied that they were allowed to have unvaccinated guests under the rules.

Eventually they agreed to allowing me to have the booking as a credit. Provided that I supplied a letter from my GP telling me not to travel....
