Just a suggestion, but perhaps Geekzone should start up a new thread which is dedicated to dealing with the covid-19 situation in overseas countries. This would allow this thread to concentrate on the NZ situation.

For example, the situation in Singapore is very interesting as there was a sharp spike of 287 coronavirus cases on Thursday (April 9), with the majority linked to foreign worker dormitories.

This is the highest daily number reported to date and brings the total number of cases here to 1,910, as the global number of cases crossed the 1.5 million mark.

Migrant workers living in vast Singapore dormitories cut off from the outside world due to the coronavirus outbreak fear their cramped and squalid quarters are fast becoming a hotbed for infection.

Singapore on Sunday said it had quarantined nearly 20,000 workers in two dormitories, made up of mainly Bangladeshi and other South Asian manual workers, after they were linked to at least 90 infections.

The government said the action was needed to prevent broader transmission in the city-state - which is closing schools and offices this week due to a spike in cases - and said it had taken measures to reduce worker interaction in the dormitories and ensure they received salary, meals and medical support.

"If anyone is infected with the virus in our room or in our block, it is just a matter of time to catch the virus," said Majidul Haq, a 25-year-old Bangladeshi, who stays at the S11 Dormitory @Punggol with some 13,000 other workers.

Haq and three other workers told Reuters they sleep in cramped 12-bed bunk rooms, share toilets and basins often blocked from overuse, and that cockroaches and overflowing refuse bins are a common sight.

Very sad.

Of note: We only did 3K tests yesterday. Easter and all, understandably. Presumably we won't be reporting a proper full day of testing until at least Weds, which will (in theory mostly) report on next Tuesday's data? I guess not much point in reading too much into things for a while

there are these clusters with unknown source? someone is (hopefully was) out there infecting people and nobody knows who - probably not even the source itself?

Frednz , Kingdragonfly,

Lessons about rebounds , about how vigilance for cv19 might work to retun us to work.
Key in this next phase.
Each place Singapore , Korea , Hong Kong, Taiwan etc gives us some different pieces to work with.
Taiwan is worth a very close look jsut for the fact little to no information in normal media on them.

My take is in coming out :

Any plan has to accommodate for a rebound , assume a rebound and ready to counter.
Identify vulnerable groups , Singapore lesson is low paid workers who work in close conditions.
Sounds like our Fruit and , Vege , and part of our logistics, construction and services, etc

Testing , Contact Tracing and PPE , has to be ready for this.

You can't come out until you have a robust Testing and Tracing infrastructure.
Second sourcing materials where possible finance local mfg as at least a backup.
False negatives are significant. We need enough testing where people can get repeated testing.

PPE , above runs on PPE lots more PPE.
Hong Kong , Taiwan etc rapidly put local PPE MFG in place.
Even Apple MFG in China built its own PPE lines, as it could not assure supply from the market.

Do this right and you don't need so many ventilators.

Privacy is something needing review , what is sufficient privacy ?
If we can assure to flush data out later can we temporarily reduce privacy a bit. Tricky...

It does concern me that the vague labeling of case locations does not help people come forward.

I understand this was the same rest home was previously mentioned in this thread a number of weeks ago when a staff member tested positive. Just goes to show how contagious this virus is even when people get isolated.

Also shows how some people may have it and not get tested, and also shows how long the virus stays active within a larger bubble. 4 weeks doesn't look like it will be enough to starve it of hosts in large bubbles.

There are dicks and then there are superdicks. This item is about a superduperdick who organised an expensive junket to the South of France by private jet for a group of privileged few who believe the rules are for everyone else. When they landed and were confronted by authorities, the superduperdick just sniffed and said he would pay whatever the fine was and carry on to their luxury lodgings. Fortunately the French were having none of it sent all the dicks back to where they came from.

People like this really don't deserve to have money and I hope the New World Order will ensure they can't get any. They belong in a leper colony waiting tables and making beds.

Yeah. The fails here was that I though symptomatic and close contacts are all supposed to be tested? Maybe he wasn't seen as a close contact, just a contact. But as in the super vulnerable sector, every patient should have been tested. Dot the i's, cross the t's. Next fail was the doctor gave him anti biotics, but not a test as well.

I hope the ring fencing they say they will do is done properly. 95% thorough wont cut it. All that will do is mean that is contained in NZ but it still pops up anywhere without notice, ongoingly. Now that we can test 6000 a day, and now the incoming travellers aren't an issue, these clusters need to be ring fenced quick smart. Any and everyone in anyway related to a cluster, has to be Level 4'd

you probably don't recall but a few hundred pages ago we were screaming that people who should be tested were not tested.

then I found a GP on FB that said he knew that people weren't tested because the MOH had strict rules on who gets tested. he said even swabs appearing at lab doors would be declined testing due to MOH rules.

so don't blame the doctors.

then one fine morning during lockdown Sir David Skegg appeared in a panel led by somebody who cannot be named, and MOH changed their guidelines and widened their testing.

i was going to bring up RH staff could be given masks to wear but I won't that will just cause too much outburst - sadly masks only work in hospitals :(.

A few hundred pages ago we didn't have large capability to test. Facebook? No thanks, I dont do tabloid. Blame the doctors? Please re read. I blamed one doctor.

Widened their testing? So we could have tested 6000 a day way way back? No. As you should know, this whole drama is a moving issue, you can't rewrite it with hindsight. We could have locked out every Kiwi offshore months ago, that would have worked too. The step by step process is working well. Two examples. Now that we can test 6000 a day, the traveler issue which was a few thousand everyday is now not an issue. Now that the efforts made show us clearly trending downwards, we can focus on clusters and CT. That because we now have the capability. It's one thing to do more, its another to have the capability.
