Rikkitic:I'm terrified I may get it. I'm old and vulnerable, but what does that mean, really?

Stu:After planning for weeks to visit Wellington mid-March to catch up with Geekzone friends (including some of the Mod team) for a Whisky or four, I've just made the difficult decision not to go. Elderly parents with lung issues, and increased risks and expenses haven't helped.
You may be over-considering the risk. I don't know where you're located but assuming you can't drive but have to fly, you'll be on a plane with vaxxed, masked people with HEPA filters in the air supply and you'll be (presumably) vaxxed and masked too. In Wellington, pick up a bottle on the way and meet your friends in open air in the Botanic Gardens with free A/C provided by Wellington, check they're vaxxed and have no symptoms first. Most of the world has been dealing with the situation we're only just starting to experience for the last two years, you need to modify your life but not shut it down completely. In particular if it's affecting your mental wellbeing you need to look after that as well.
Technofreak:
I'm curious as why there's a stated high false negative rate. Is it because people aren't following the instructions correctly? I have to do them every day I go to work. I'd like to think they are reasonably accurate if done correctly.
It's a number of factors, but its around 50% accurate. If it says you have covid, you definitely do, but if it says no, you still might have it. If you are having them daily or even a couple of times a week it's accurate enough.
It's why MOH guidelines say if you are having symptoms get a RATS and if you are still having symptoms the next day have another.

Handle9: We’ve been dealing with Covid actively around us for 2 years in Dubai. Since vaccinations we have travelled internationally, have an active social life, play sport and the kids go to school and play sports. I work from home mostly but my wife has been in class since September 2020.
My reasoning for starting to travel again was similar, one of the guys I work with lives in the crowded centre of Vienna, population 2+ million, they travel regularly to Germany, Italy, and Greece (work and family visits), and they have a young daughter in school. Despite this, none of them have caught it, just by following basic precautions and being sensible. If they can do that for more than two years then I can manage it for two weeks.
There's also the problem that you have to start living some sort of life again at some point, and widespread vaccination, lots of precautions, and the predominance of a less dangerous variant seem like a good time to start.
People on planes don't always wear masks, particularly on Jetstar I hear. Given the daily case numbers I think caution is justified at the moment, but not fear. While some people do get quite sick or even die, we've had eight family members get Omicron overseas, seven were asymptomatic, one had mild cold symptoms. Get your jabs, take vitamin D which might help a little (article), and just be a little wary.
I've also increased my stock of hardware store things, in case I need to do anything while isolating. Pretty sure I can fix many things with what I have, including a temporary repair for a broken window (maybe - double glazed), most leaks, holes, things falling off, etc. Also keep good supplies of house painting materials.

Handle9: Taking precautions doesn’t mean you won’t get Covid. Heaps of our friends have had it, someone else our house caught it as well. It happens.
Sure, but the point I was making is that you shouldn't assume that travel = catch Covid, stay at home = don't catch Covid. I'm more worried about catching it from having a cup of tea with a neighbour whose son-in-law popped by for a visit two days earlier after picking up his daughter from preschool (to invent an example) than I am from being on a plane with a P99 mask in a HEPA-filtered air flow.
People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.
Keep calm, and carry on posting.
