The Covid-19 pandemic has injected an unprecedented amount of uncertainty into the global economy, as countries across the world battle growing infections, implement wide-ranging social-distancing strategies and attempt early fiscal interventions to stabilise markets.

While managing the immediate health crisis is vital and necessary for economic stability, experts have already begun assessing how a recovery might look once the virus is contained and which countries stand to bounce back best.

Ranked 12th-most resilient in the index, New Zealand scores especially high in corporate governance and its supply chain. The country has also been able to move quickly to contain the spread of the virus by shutting borders to international travellers on 19 March and enacting a non-essential-business lockdown on 25 March.

So, New Zealand is 12th on the "recovery" list, while the top 10 are:

4. Germany

New York Times: ‘It’s heartbreaking’: US Farms are destroying millions of pounds of fresh goods that they can no longer sell.

After weeks of concern about shortages in grocery stores and mad scrambles to find the last box of pasta or toilet paper roll, many of the America's largest farms are struggling with another ghastly effect of the pandemic. They are being forced to destroy tens of millions of pounds of fresh food that they can no longer sell.

The closing of restaurants, hotels and schools has left some US farmers with no buyers for more than half their crops. And even as retailers see spikes in food sales to Americans who are now eating nearly every meal at home, the increases are not enough to absorb all of the perishable food that was planted weeks ago and intended for schools and businesses.

The amount of waste is staggering. America’s largest dairy cooperative, Dairy Farmers of America, estimates that farmers are dumping as many as 3.7 million gallons of milk each day. A single chicken processor is smashing 750,000 unhatched eggs every week.

Many farmers say they have donated part of the surplus to food banks and Meals on Wheels programs, which have been overwhelmed with demand. But there is only so much perishable food that charities with limited numbers of refrigerators and volunteers can absorb.

And the costs of harvesting, processing and then transporting produce and milk to food banks or other areas of need would put further financial strain on farms that have seen half their paying customers disappear. Exporting much of the excess food is not feasible either, farmers say, because many international customers are also struggling through the pandemic and recent currency fluctuations make exports unprofitable.

“It’s heartbreaking,” said Paul Allen, co-owner of R.C. Hatton, who has had to destroy millions of pounds of beans and cabbage at his farms in South Florida and Georgia.

Danish have very high Tax invested heavily in social services just what you need for resilience, and providing Government a deep well of resource to support economy for all. Ok enabled of good old north sea.
They did take central control and kept high tax vs alternative which would be we are rich give everyone a tax holiday til the money runs out.

Sweden seems to be getting the jitters as the force of CV19 builds. Not pursuing eradication , keeping economy going and just relying on the natural self discipline of Swedes.

Economists have perhaps overlooked how public health and degree of societal trauma effects the economic outcome.

Economy relies on people coming out spending again, positive for the future and building new business from ashes of the old.
Traumatized public won't buy the same things (tat) as before nor as much.
Optimism , Health of population physically and mentally supporting New ideas and entrepreneurship.
Protection of old money often opposes this.

We do need a new bankruptcy structure, if its a Earthquake, or this.
A mechanism that allows better ability to trade out without the stigma and fault chasing people around for acts of .

Driving with no traffic on the road is basically weird. This is something many people have not experienced..it would not surprise me if we get some fatalities as a result. Alcohol and unrestricted speed playing a part as usual.

     25 - 28 March 2016
     14 - 17 April 2017
     30 March - 2 April 2018
     19 - 22 April 2019, and
     10 - 13 April 2020

So to get a full accounting for the "Easter Holidays" effect, we'll need to get the data up till 22nd / 23rd April, but we're obviously not there yet

I have just finished mowing my lawns including the council berm (retreating back onto my section while people walked past on the footpath).

In general I already have a pretty low opinion of cigarette smokers, but it is now at an all time low after finding at least a dozen cigarette butts in the grass. So I faced a choice of blowing them into the gutter and them ending up in the harbour, or pick them up and put them in the bin, thereby handling something that had been in someone’s mouth.

The environment lost out this time I’m afraid.

Unfortunately still some idiots on the road. Brother messaged me saying motorcyclist being pursued by police, reckons motorcyclist going over 200kmph.

Looks like motorcyclist has hit a civilian car. This is in Mt Roskill, Auckland about 20 mins ago.

He says white sheet now on road.

If you can't laugh at yourself then you probably shouldn't laugh at others.

We have a significant area of council land as we are on a corner section. The amount of fast food wrappers and cups we end up with both on the berm and tossed over our fence is quite staggering. Generally it just gets chopped up by the mower and goes in the catcher.
