It's not COVID we need to worry about from international visitors but the FLU's and RSV's that we haven't been exposed to for 2 years. It's going to be total carnage if they get loose. Isolation would slow this down and in many cases prevent it.

people wash their hands more, sanitize and use face masks, along with social distancing. they all still work for those virus's you mentioned.

what are the stats looking like overseas for those virus's? unless there is been a major increase somewhere why would not open up?

It's  not a matter if there's been an increase or not overseas, it's that we haven't been exposed to these infections for the past two years. There is no doubt our health system has had a "free run" in this respect for the last two years. The argument is that as well as Covid the health system will have to deal with other infections too.

I'm not making any claim about how bad it will be just that there will be an impact.

Eva888: Breaking News on Stuff

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced that from Wednesday at 11:59pm, vaccinated travellers from Australia will no longer need to self-isolate for a week
* The border will fully reopen for Kiwis returning from anywhere from Friday.

This is total insanity.

This isn't the thread for that discussion.

The booster shot this weekend is making its presence felt. I have been shattered today and a somewhat painful arm. At least I know it’s doing its thing.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Had a scare last few days; currently travelling around the South Island by car taking my Xmas holidays. Caught up with a mate in Nelson and had dinner, then back to his place for about 30 minutes. Made plans to catch up on Sunday, but he contacted me to say his daughter was a close contact and had symptoms. On Sunday they got the postive result.

Now thankfully I only saw the daughter at their house in passing and have been pretty good this holidays at sanitising. I don't have any symptoms and am continuing my holiday as planned but made the call not to catch up with any friends over the next month or so who have school age children... Or I do, then I'll be distant and insist on mask wearing on both sides, along with being outside.

I'm not that bothered if I catch it, but I really do not want to pass it to my father

Seems everyones children are currently getting it. I remember when the MOH said that schools were low risk and children didn't tend to catch covid, when it seems to be the opposite.

I do wonder how long China and Hong Kong are going to stick with the zero covid and elimination for and whether they know something that the rest of the world doesn't about it as the reason for sticking to this approach, especially considering all paths lead to it starting in China. NZs tourism sector is no doubt going to start complaining as Chinese tourists apparently can't travel overseas and they aren't an insignificant part of NZs high value tourism punters. I had hoped that NZs economy with pivot away from tourism as a result of covid and all the carbon and pollution is causes, as long term it isn't sustainable anyway.

What has that got to do with this thread? There are other threads for this sort of stuff.

Oblivian: Goes to show how little damns given are now.

Retail chain store. Has removed all the scan qr codes from windows. Put a single almost ripped one with ballot box inside door. Should anyone still want to.

None of the staff wearing coverings.

I'd suggest that's a very isolated incident. Every place I've been to in the past few weeks has been continuing though many feel it shouldn't be required.

Maybe an Auckland thing?

Down here in the last couple of weeks I've seen mask wearing stopping by a noticeable portion of people even in shops and little effort at scanning.

Quite possibly, it certainly was pretty poor over Xmas and Jan in the Coromandel, esp by restaurant staff, many who were all wearing an exemption badge (self printed ones lol).

Did not get any noticable effects from the Booster Shot in everyday life. But at the Gym my strength in lifts went down 20%, it was really noticable / measurable. Discussed this with many other gym rats and they have reported the exact same side effect. We Felt great but just can not move the same weight as before. It is like your sick but not feeling sick.

This is just anecdotal, But we felt the booster dehydrates the muscle bellies and which leads to weight loss. 3Kg for me. It has took me 2 weeks to recover the lost weight and strength back.

I wonder when I get Covid the same thing will happen or worse? I guess I will find out soon, as no way coivd stays out of a gym.

Same here. Was in the corner dairy a couple of days ago, - way more people in there than should have been. People waltzing in and out without masks and not scanning. A friend had an optometrist appointment and a guy went in without a mask and didn't scan. Was asked if he'd scanned in and said "oh, we don't have to anymore".

I just did my shopping on-line at Countdown. I have to say I am very impressed at how smoothly everything works. The site is very well-constructed and easy to navigate. When so many businesses here seem to get this kind of thing so wrong, they deserve full praise for getting it so right.

Same but a one third reduction in 1RM the day after boosting.  A hangover normally costs me 10%.  Still happy to have a booster though.
