100%. My employer, who I wont name, will be a major player with support. Others will too. Some occupations wont have that available, and the Govt, should it get big will need to step up. Not easy, but that does need to be the backstop. Im just cringing about the media boom that will occur. I just want real facts, and direction, not the media frenzy that will happen.

What I find annoying is all the positive rhetoric and back patting they seem to be doing, about how well NZ is managing it.  Not sure if this is to provide reassurance to the public. It is really difficult to tell how good NZ is actually handling it as a result, due to a lack of detailed information. It all seems dumbed down. Apparently there will be a media campaign for the public about it in the coming days, as TV ads and on social media. .

Why is this happening?

Any traveller on the final leg of the flight, Emirates EK450 arriving Auckland on Wednesday February 26, and is concerned should contact the Covid-19 Healthline number 0800 358 5453.

The authorities know everyone that arrives, and travel history. Why did you go to China, thenVietnam, then Thailand for a day? Thats how we nab drug traffickers. But we need to ask travellers to call an 0800 number? /smh

So they seek help etc before they get found. Makes sense.

They should be sought out first. We know who they are, where they been. Easier to locate them at the terminal, than at Countdown and the movies. It depends if we want to have some form of border control/block the virus or not. So far NZ has been "or not".

Except we obviously didn't know at the time they arrived. As Mike said, it may be faster for them to get in touch than for the government to find them.

They didn't know when the patient was in the terminal that they had the virus. They have now made the flight number known to the public so passengers come forward. Finding them without the additional publicity could take weeks. It is a reasonable proceedure.

debo:

What concerns me is the two failed tests on the kiwi from Iran.  The doctors suspected he had the virus so they tested him a third time.  I now have no confidence on the results on all the other negative tests that have been carried out in NZ.

This concerns me as well. Being a retired paediatric nurse and having collected multiple sputum samples. For example from CF patients, mainly for Aspergillosis which is a deep seated pulmonary bug. If the COVID-19 is just as deep seated then the quickest and easiest sampling/testing method is the inhalation of an highly atomised Hypertonic Normal Saline solution. And the larger the sample the greater are the chances of an accurate laboratory test result.

Normal Saline solution is 0.9% Sodium Chloride (0.9% NaCl), which is the same as tears or a physiologic solution. Hypertonic Saline is >1%. Normally I have used 5% NaCl for CF patients and the highest I have used was 7% for a suspected TB patient. NaCl at this level, >1%, is an irritant to the bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli of the lung. The higher the percentage of NaCl greater the irritant. You have to be accredited for this procedure. All physiotherapists are and most senior nurses. I was accredited. As you can imagine, you feel like you are coughing your lungs up. This method of testing is the least invasive. A lung biopsy being the most invasive.

Of course there is always, and the most likely hypothesis, that the current testing method, due to its hasty introduction, was most certainly a modified pre-existing test. Hopefully they will very quickly come up with a very much targeted and accurate collection method and laboratory test.

It's confirmed and has arrived in town (stay calm - here in Hamburg/Germany)!

Surprisingly the guy who was in Italy for holidays is an employee of the University Hospital. 🤭

I'm gonna shop some food tonight lasting 14 days just in case I/we catch it as well to quarantine ourself when infected. There's nothing to panic.

All servers running normal - Plex is in standby ;-)

I wonder if some supermarkets may start putting their prices up on things like canned food. If that sort of thing occurs, hope the government steps in to stop companies profiting off this sort of thing. Hopefully they will also put quantity restrictions in place on food to stop a run on shelves.

Supermarkets no but Dairy’s maybe.

Panic buying induces panic buying but that is human nature. Unless you are trained to think first and not be a lamb then go for it. Me I’ll go bush with my highly trained brother. That’s if I can beat the traffic jams.

Pricing won't move in the short term, but given our reliance on imported goods, any thing is possible.
