Fred99:

Dexamethasone is a steroid, it probably helps with preventing "cytokine storm" - turning your lung tissue into jellymeat.

That's exactly what it does. So it's only useful if you're already in an ICU, it's from an unreviewed paper, and it improves your chances by 5%, which is the margin of error in other studies.

I know everyone is desperate for a miracle cure, but this is really grasping at straws.

Batman:

the next Herald article better not read something like - our contact tracing is not capable of tracing 320 close contacts

No, I think it would say something like "our contact tracing is barely capable of tracing 1 contact". That is, the laborious manual person-to-person tracing is fine, but the automated tracing is nonexistent.

The MoH's performance has been a disgrace. There's now additional reports of people absconding from compassionate leave.

And for extra fun: a withering Auditor-General's Office report on the MoH's management of PPEs

At some point, only the truly deluded would believe all the spin and BS that was and continue to be given by the MoH that things are being well managed and there were only isolated errors. Oh and hopefully no one forgot how the MoH allowed a hotel accommodating isolated travelers to let those travelers come into close contact with the staff of the Chief Ombudsman. That's totally not incompetence at all. For the usual fanboys and the tdgeeks of this world: when you are responsible and accountable for doing a job, you're also accountable for the behaviour of people your contract to help with your responsibilities. This is how the real world works.

These issues also reveal a startling gap in our so called leadership: the absolute unwillingness to pass strict laws and to implement measures that reflect the threat posed to the health of millions of innocent people by those in isolation/quarantine, instead constantly relying on trust and 'feel good' to manage them. It's unbelievable that two youths recently caught absconding from isolation were just given a slap on the wrist with a wet bus taken. Perhaps there weren't suitable legislation but the correct outcome should have been an arrest, charges before the Youth Court, and hopefully a decent bout of community work at a minimum.

Same thing with those two stupid women arriving from the UK: a poster many pages ago said it succinctly -- the idea that after spending a lot of money and resources to get here, that they would not do everything possible to achieve their aims, and ignore any symptoms or the like that might be "inconvenient", is laughable. Thus there was only ever one control: perfect processes. And we all know those don't exist. There shouldn't be exemptions for funerals -- the person is dead and those are held mainly for the living.

The two stupid and selfish **** back from the UK look ever more dickish by the minute

The Ministry of Health say after leaving the hotel in a private car provided by friends, the women got lost on Auckland's motorway system.

They confirmed that the women met with two friends who were the ones who provided the car.

"As part of this the pair were in limited physical contact with the two friends for approximately five minutes."

One of the two who met the women to give directions would later attend a gym class, before she knew that the two women had tested positive.

These two incompetent, stupid, selfish, and poor excuse for humans (who apparently did nothing wrong according to our increasingly disgraceful and embarrassing Director General of Health and one other prominent politician), who are aged in their 30s and 40s respectively, are apparently too stupid to use Google Maps.

And how's this for a nauseating piece of propaganda on their behalf by the MoH?

The ministry say it's important to remember that the two women were distressed at the time by the sudden death of their family member.

"It is not uncommon for information and details to evolve, including details being missed during case interviews and contact tracing where there is heightened emotion, intense grief and stress."

Someone buy those of us with a brain still a bucket. We need to throw up.

Washington Post: Ohio GOP lawmaker fired from ER job over remarks about ‘colored population’ and covid-19

A Republican lawmaker in Ohio was fired from his job as a physician for asking whether “African Americans or the colored population” have been disproportionately affected by the novel coronavirus pandemic because they “do not wash their hands as well as other groups.”

State Sen. Steve Huffman, who represents a district north of Dayton, raised the question Tuesday during a hearing on whether to declare racism a public health crisis. Huffman, an emergency room doctor, wanted to know why African American communities are being hit so much harder by the virus, posing the query to Angela Dawson, executive director of the Ohio Commission on Minority Health.

“I understand African Americans have a higher incidence of chronic conditions and that makes them more susceptible to death from covid. But why does it not make them more susceptible to just get covid?” he asked. “Could it just be that African Americans or the colored population do not wash their hands as well as other groups? Or wear a mask? Or do not socially distance themselves? Could that be the explanation for why the higher incidence?"

...Huffman’s remarks, which came amid widespread protests calling for racial justice and equality following the death of George Floyd, prompted swift outcry online and from other local lawmakers.

On Thursday, Huffman was fired from his emergency-room physician job for the comments.

At the rate the MoH is going, frankly people should brace themselves for level 3.

Every time I refresh my Twitter feed, I see a new quarantine story about some sort of breach. This is nuts.

there is no way people will go back to Level 3, it will be like the USA , people will just not listen and wonder why should they .

There is something that we can all do that will help when there are failures like this one - that is make sure we all have the official COVID-19 app on our phones and that we scan the QR codes as we move around shops, restaurants, library, bars etc etc.

Currently the number of places that are displaying an official QR code to scan is very low and this must change - we need to be all asking where the QR codes are when we go into a shop etc without one - if they say it is too hard to get one - they need need to try harder as it is not hard at all any longer - you can request a QR code for your own home if you want and then all your friends can scan in when they visit!

Unfortunate as it is I think the latest 2 new cases is a positive development as it has now brought the previously questionable quarantine (& border) controls under the highest scrutiny that may not have otherwise occurred

The line between success and failure in politics is paper thin and we have been let down badly by MOH and govt. The borders are not anywhere near as secure as they should be, despite the spin. its slack processes all round and now the military has been given the job of quarantine. Unbelievable. Why didnt we think of that in the first place? Instead we put them up at the Novotel with exactly who guarding them? A few moh staff with phamplets and best intentions? This is turning into a nightmare.

Runaways granted exemption to go to the funeral of mob relative

What great decision-making. Because a bunch of criminals and mobsters were really going to be the sort that we should rely on to ensure the youths would abide by the rules and head back into isolation.

Na it's all good they said they would stay in their car at the Mongrel Mob tangi!

Did the person who approved this come down in the last shower? Did they mix up the Mongrel Mob with the Rotary Club?
