Id wager Kiwis, being a quiet conservative lot are at the lower end, but if any lesson is learned for Covid 23 or 28 or 33, the ease that people don't care needs to be addressed.

i've been following social media and mainstream news media around the world - there is a proportion who believe Covid is not as bad as their govts make it to look.

just watch skynews australia for example. they don't believe their govt. maybe things have changed but i've stopped watching for that reason!

Do you want to pay the police to stand around guarding hotels? I would rather the police attended to more serious matters and the licenced security staff had the power to detain absconders until the police arrived on site.

Apparently border security staff do? Can security guards be upgraded too border security staff for their shift? They are in fact doing border security work, protecting the security of the border.

Oh, you’re talking about a completely different country, with a completely different mindset and law enforcement system.
Our private security firms might not be the A-Team but I haven’t heard too many reports of them using force in excess of what is justifiable.

I’m tired of absconders thinking they are more important than the rest of us. You leave the facility, you spend the rest of your stay quarantined in a detention centre. It’s a shame the military detention centre isn’t still open at Ardmore.

Lol. That really is quite funny. Most security guards run around in a cute little pretend police uniform. My experience of the "ethics" private security industry confirms that I wouldn't let any of the guard a thing.

The police have a hard enough time understanding what reasonable force is without enabling wannabe police with no training.

Police need to do their job and security can do theirs. If this is the most important thing to New Zealand put people who have at least been trained in the use of force in the role. If you do not there will be some horrible incidents.

That has consequences elsewhere but so be it if you want to do something about the absconders then apply the appropriate resources.

I know of someone in the US (Florida which seem to be a major hotspot) in their early 20's, who got covid after a single trip out to a mall type of environment. They were always wearing a mask, and were very careful. The only other times they had been out was normal supermarket shopping. So it can be very easy to catch.

They were badly ill for 3 weeks, and are still not totally over it. They were also stigmatized and blamed by other family members for getting it and putting other family members at risk. It is a virus that should never have been allowed to spread like it did. It is bad, but some governments don't want it to appear bad, because it then makes those governments look bad for letting it spread without more heavy handed intervention. NZ and China were and are now both being tough on the virus, both in their own different ways, with elimination the goal.

Having prosecuted and written legal opinions on cases involving private security guards and bouncers using excessive force, I absolutely beg to differ. I also have experience in the procurement of security services for a government department and private enterprises and absolutely share the opinion of @Handle9.

Covid is the largest crisis befalling the country at the moment. If we are serious about stopping CT, we need to control the small minority of absolute animals amongst the group in isolation. There are no better candidates than the police — the notion that a lot of the day-to-day police has any potentially similar economic and social impact as Covid CT is laughable. The whinging from the police union is nothing other than the classic “We are too manly/important to do this kind of stuff!” rubbish. They aren’t.

This morning I read two stories about couples/families who want in New Zealand despite not being citizens or permanent residents.

One, a couple currently in a their country (not their original country) who went over for a holiday and couldn't come back as they have work visas. The alternative is to go back to the UK. They claim to not have anything there since they moved to New Zealand a few years back, for work.

The other is a South African family whose father got a job offer in New Zealand and secured a work visa. They were waiting for the kids visas to arrive before moving, having already bought a car, tools of trade and other goods here in New Zealand. They are now waiting in South Africa but can't come in.

Yes, these are sad stories but the media keep pushing the sob stories.

Wait until the media realises this update from INZ:

If your visa expires after 9 July and you are in New Zealand

If you hold a open work visa, student, visitor, limited or interim visa with an expiry date after 9 July, your visa was not extended by the Epidemic Management Notice or the change announce on 7 July 2020. Your current visa expiry remains the same. You need to:

leave the country before your visa expires,
make an application for a new visa
This includes partners or dependent children who hold a visa based on the relationship with an employer-assisted work visa.

If you are in New Zealand and your visa has expired

If you do not have a current visa or are unable to apply for a visa before your current one expires, you will be unlawful in New Zealand. This includes people whose visa expired before the 1 April 2020.

You cannot apply for another visa in New Zealand while you are unlawful. You can either:

leave the country immediately if possible, or
make a request for a special temporary or resident visa under Section 61 of the Immigration Act.

So what is the legal definition of a License Security officer (layman's terms) and what are their legal powers in this situation. e.g. stop and detain to prevent absconsion - how can they physically detain and for how long. Is this a bench case awaiting to happen ?

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
