Yes, these are sad stories but the media keep pushing the sob stories.

Wait until the media realises this update from INZ:

Might be some more abandoned rentals in our future if any were still cruising the country.

Interesting the interviews to those at the managed facilities the other night. Seems to be a lot of Brits, Americans etc

I guess may be a lot more dual citizenship couples out there making the most of our position than we reaslise.

This morning I read two stories about couples/families who want in New Zealand despite not being citizens or permanent residents.

One, a couple currently in a their country (not their original country) who went over for a holiday and couldn't come back as they have work visas. The alternative is to go back to the UK. They claim to not have anything there since they moved to New Zealand a few years back, for work.

The other is a South African family whose father got a job offer in New Zealand and secured a work visa. They were waiting for the kids visas to arrive before moving, having already bought a car, tools of trade and other goods here in New Zealand. They are now waiting in South Africa but can't come in.

Yes, these are sad stories but the media keep pushing the sob stories.

Wait until the media realises this update from INZ:

If your visa expires after 9 July and you are in New Zealand

If you hold a open work visa, student, visitor, limited or interim visa with an expiry date after 9 July, your visa was not extended by the Epidemic Management Notice or the change announce on 7 July 2020. Your current visa expiry remains the same. You need to:

  • leave the country before your visa expires,
  • make an application for a new visa

This includes partners or dependent children who hold a visa based on the relationship with an employer-assisted work visa.

If you are in New Zealand and your visa has expired

If you do not have a current visa or are unable to apply for a visa before your current one expires, you will be unlawful in New Zealand. This includes people whose visa expired before the 1 April 2020.

You cannot apply for another visa in New Zealand while you are unlawful. You can either:

  • leave the country immediately if possible, or
  • make a request for a special temporary or resident visa under Section 61 of the Immigration Act.

I'm not sure what your complaint is. Should the media only tell stories that support the governments actions?

Sob stories, sure you have to feel sorry for them, but its like any situation where places are limited.

Some commentators have mentioned that there are upwards of potentially up to 1M people offshore who have rights of NZ residents.
Even a small % of these seems to be adding up to a large number who want/have to return.
Not not just people who had an overseas trip or OE interrupted.
Large numbers who were working in Australia and now with covid and downturn NZ is only place where they can get support.
Aussie of course are letting us know that backlog of 501's are queued up ready to go too.

Total numbers who would return if tap was opened wider has probably surprised and shocked officials who made initial estimates.
Some were probably expecting more would shelter in place while airfares were high, but it did not turn out that way.
I can understand that while you are trying to build systems that no-one has ever had to before you may not want to have multiple experiments with multiple types of travelers operating at the same time.

Its hard to find space for essential workers and visa holders , when NZers are waiting in the queue and not enough space for everyone.
I would expect also that some categories of essential workers we really want NZers trained up for anyway as we get more of them.

Taking in 10sK students in mass with the systems and staff you would need to monitor them up to their xxx with accelerating number of NZers still returning.
Never mind that we are finding that this is actually harder than expected as a % of these are selfish, willful, un-cooperative, idiots.
Escaping from Waipuna ? Its a lovely location, and the fenced exercise area is probably the nicest of any hotel.

Hotels are not prisons, free food, WiFi, dry-cleaning, clean sheets, towels, even some toys and games for the kids I understand.
If you had to pay a bit for movies or netfics, a bit extra for booze  you are so far ahead its not funny, zero living costs.
Some have done things like make wearable art out of the paper bags from deliveries, plan their future in NZ, etc.
Its what you make of it.

I think the problem is rentry, and qualifying.. A few weeks ago thee was a south African family on TV who went back to south Africa  for a brief period, and now they can't get back in. They rent and work in NZ, but are now staying with elderly family members in SA.

I believe INZ was one of the Govt departments named where the lack of pre-existing WFH capability meant that a lot of staff were on full pay for the duration of the lockdown but not actually doing any work.

Well that's a great knee-jerk. They were neither citizens nor residents.

FineWine: So what is the legal definition of a License Security officer (layman's terms) and what are their legal powers in this situation. e.g. stop and detain to prevent absconsion - how can they physically detain and for how long.

IANAL. Practically zero in this scenario imo. Security guards are not prison guards and hotels are not prisons. You're better off investing in some time to educate the guests on what is expected and the consequences of non-compliance under the health act or whatever it is.
