All I had to do was read the Washington Post byline to know it was an anti-Trump political piece masquerading as COVID news.

Separating COVID from politics is futile, especially in the US. Given public policy is the only way to deal with the virus it is entirely logical that politics and COVID are intertwined.

They have butchered their response for many reasons, including weak leadership.

It's all fun and games to belittle and ignore science, until there's there's no solution left but to scream "science save us."

How about taking this (and any hard right rants) somewhere else? The hypocrisy is especially rich when you complained about "political spam" in this thread.

Nope, just calling it out since the hint wasn’t taken.

Edit: And what hard right rants? Too binary by far.

Reality is "anti Trump".

Its possible anywhere. Level 4 for 4 to 5 weeks, plus the other stuff. If you remove hosts, you remove infection. Basic math. The leftovers you can hoover up. Easy to say for a 5 million population, but if its 300M as per the US, same applies. The ability to promote and get the masses on board is another issue.

The smaller nations can do this. Often its more dense, but if the respective Govt can provide a will to the people, a few weeks sucking it up will give a HUGE benefit

I'm not sure you can compare NZ and USA so directly. There's a world of difference between locking down for 6 weeks in a 3 bedroom house with garden and low housing density (so walking the streets for exercise is safe) and doing the same in a one-room NY apartment with no garden and no kitchen and a million other people living within a mile of you. Not to mention a risk-taking safety-averse anti-government culture which has led to inadequate social welfare and health systems. USA's problems are as much systemic as coronavirus, and no one could turn that juggernaut fast enough.

Doesn't help that they don't have anyone able at governing at the wheel.

Which wheel? One of the fundamental problems in this situation with the US is they are not one country but rather a collection of states.

They have highly diversified government structures so that there are many different organisations competing for the same turf.

They are quite unified with foreign policy but domestic policy is a very different story.

PM is addressing the plan of attack going forward live

Basing /watching closely on overseas experiences of re-boot (often managed facilities)

Stamp it out approach/break the chain remains foundation

Re-enforcing tracking and hand hygiene

Confirmed likely Regional Lockdowns - all measures to prevent entire country

- Scenario specific based based on 3 broad cases. Individual, Cluster, Multi Cluster

Hopefully this is just a precaution. And their not going to confirm a new case of community transmission later today. It would suck if one of the recent isolation escapees's has caused a new outbreak/cluster.

Right now we are in limbo, its sorted here, and well over 30000 passengers that have brought covid here, but we have no CT. Its always been stated we will get a case, so its time to expand what we will do. Its always been said there could be regional lockdowns, ring fencing, so todays announcement says literally nothing new. But its a bit more detail, and as PM said, many people think its near to over, not a big deal anymore, its a reminder its not over. Its understandable some may get blase now, IMHO

Right. But I don't think it's possible for anyone to get the masses on board in the USA. For example, the USA was deeply divided over entering WW1 & WW2, and arguably it was only attacks on US ships (WW1) and Pearl Harbor (WW2) that got the country united.

Whilst the present incumbent is more divisive than uniting, I don't think *any* US President, past or present, nor any of the Presidential candidates, could get the masses on board.
