New York Times: The Trump administration orders hospitals to bypass the C.D.C. with key virus data, alarming health experts.

The Trump administration has ordered hospitals to bypass the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and, beginning on Wednesday, send all coronavirus patient information to a central database in Washington — a move that has alarmed public health experts who fear the data will be distorted for political gain.

The new instructions are contained in a little-noticed document posted this week on the Department of Health and Human Services’ website, Sheryl Gay Stolberg reports. From now on, H.H.S., and not the C.D.C., will collect daily reports about the patients that each hospital is treating, how many beds and ventilators are available, and other information vital to tracking the pandemic.

...“The C.D.C. is the right agency to be at the forefront of collecting the data,” said Dr. Bala Hota, the chief analytics officer at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

Public health experts have long expressed concern that the administration is politicizing science and undermining the disease control centers; four former C.D.C. directors, spanning both Republican and Democratic administrations, said as much in an opinion piece published Tuesday in The Washington Post. The data collection shift reinforced those fears.

..The dispute exposes the vast gaps in the government’s ability to collect and manage health data — an antiquated system at best, experts say.

Its a concern if the testing rate is not enough to cover vulnerable groups.
Isolation Hotel Staff, Security, Cleaning etc, Airline and Airport Staff, Inwards Logistics Staff, Ports and Customs Biosecurity.
Repeatedly unfortunately. Melbourne is regretting poor coverage of ALL the staff around Hotels and interactions.

If the returnee testing is included in number it seems low ?

The regime change kicked into action only tuesday/yesterday. We won't see a flow on effect for a few days. But those concerns were addressed and frontline contact works are to be.

(he also pointed out holidays overseas also had a trend of lower figures)

And again, you can't MAKE people volunteer to magically change testing figures. That is volun-told. But you can make it a part of a working requirement and upset a few.

Wondering if this is a beatup... whilst hospitals may now be reporting directly to the national task force in Washington, I don't see why they couldn't/wouldn't also be reporting it to the CDC. i.e. it's not bypassing the CDC, just sending in parallel. But I don't see the necessity... if data went directly only to the CDC, surely it would only be milliseconds before they forwarded it to the national task force?

Yes elections to win,

Looks like the instruction does not support reporting in parallel, but channeling data 'only' to HHS , where its not open to public.
Guess Americans will see how this pans out in next few days.
Its hard to see how they can have an agile response with data so controlled, and test results taking 4-7 days in hot zones.
Which is another problem in being able to warn contacts , even if contact tracing has been given up on.

They are on the wrong track. NZ mentioned, small island, hasn't had 375000 arriving from overseas. Well we've has 1/10 of that go through MQI, add to that what came in before that, it must be similar per capita?

This has been my point about Australia for a long time, and why I can't see any travel bubble occurring for a long time unless they change their approach. They are now learning how much cost not going down the elimination path costs, with two lockdowns in some areas. The fact is that some states have/had eliminated it, so it was possible for them to do. But the PM was so for opening the borders and that they had to get on with life and let the economy recover. But that can't really happen in when the country has Covid, and it has to be kept suppressed, as that requires lockdowns and physical distancing. Covid can cripple the economy and businesses, because of the massive restrictions it puts on businesses, and some businesses can' operate affordably in a covid economy.

For NZ, obviously our achilles heal are potential leaks through the managed isolation hotels, so if it gets into the community again, then that will likely be the source. Australias managed isolation hotels operate in a very similar way to NZs, where they traced back their main Victoria outbreak to their managed isolation hotels. So IMO it is false economy not to make sure that these are as watertight as possible. Even restrict the numbers entering like Australia if we are running out of suitable hotels.

Yep, we are restricting the numbers, and the MIQ are as watertight as they can be, as they say, they are hotels not prisons. Well over 30,000 through them, no damage yet

I understand the minister said that they are not 'Maximum Security Prisons', which is quite a big difference. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/122094498/coronavirus-two-new-cases-in-isolation-minister-says-facilities-not-maximum-security-prisons . They are quarantine containment areas, which are designed to keep people in, which works somewhat like a prison, even if people don't like the word prison. eg people aren't allowed to leave it until their 14 days is up or they are free of the virus.

We were told they were watertight before all the recent additional improvements which were done, such as new fencing, police onsite etc . So we have to keep improving them , and also learn based from Australias holes. We won't ever know if there have been leaks until 1-2 weeks down the track, because it silently spreads.

If you watch Toms Hanks interview on Stephen Colbert, he had the virus, and his antibodies to the virus have gradually dropped over time. So it doesn't appear people have long term immunity. It will be interesting in the coming months how many people do get reinfected with it. His experience with the virus didn't sound too pleasant either.

There are a number of aspects to immunity, so the antibody drop off may not be all the story, other mechanisms can provide long term immunity.

Blood samples taken from a group of UK volunteers given a dose of the vaccine showed that it stimulated the body to produce both antibodies and "killer T-cells", a senior source said.

The discovery is promising because separate studies have suggested that antibodies may fade away within months while T-cells can stay in circulation for years.

Though with all of these the usual warnings apply that we only have a few months of data, and more investigation ongoing.
We will certainly have more solid data in by the time NZ is in the queue to get any Vaccine.
It will be quite some time after mass vaccination data from those who have bought places in the front row comes in.

Long term immunity is best gold standard response.
Though one that may give a protection of a certain period and then only a mild infection years later is pretty useful too.
Just means a different strategy to deployment.

Plus we have upwards 170 parallel efforts that differ , and Antibody/Synthetic-antibody treatments being worked on, different strategy, but useful.
