The number of coronavirus cases being diagnosed outside of China each day is now 18 times higher than inside the hardest-hit nation. (Just based on one day data, yesterday

China also sending crucial supplies to affected countries

And placing restrictions on some affected countries as they are now getting imported cases

While we dont know the real numbers, its possible that 3 months of growth in China with the 3 months of measures are now making it diffcult for the virus to easily spread. Thats the potential and hope for other countries, While these others aren't being as aggressive as China was able to be, they are still being aggressive in Italy etc. Self isolation and travel restrictions are hopefully suffocating it.

I wouldn't use anything with BZK on a baby's skin, it doesn't surprise me though, these products are marketed to encourage "germophobia" because it helps sales. And now here we are - genuinely worried about a germ (again). BZK (and other names/abbreviations for the product) don't usually define what it actually is (the alkyl group influences properties) . There are quite a few BZK based sanitisers on an "interim list" list from US CDC for surface cleaners. It's generally known to be safe - and probably works, but the paper I read where it was tested on live SARS virus, it wasn't as good as alcohol or chlorine solutions. Can't find that paper again, but here's another.

Finally, in regard to the different studies on HCoVs’s sensitivity to antiseptics-disinfectants, only few formulations are efficient within an adapted contact time and without a too-strong toxicity. For instance, considering their lack of efficiency against HCoVs, and also their toxicity, products only based on quaternary ammoniums or phenolic compounds should be avoided.

It's interesting that face masks are still regarded as very useful despite some of their drawbacks which have been referred to in this forum. But, as mentioned several times, it's almost impossible now for ordinary members of the public to buy them in Kiwiland! Perhaps the Government should release some of their 18 million face masks to the public?

Very true. The N95 masks will stop outward infection (although you should be at home anyway) In a hospital situation that is very useful. Maybe thats the sole purpose. They are one use then throw away as well

I suspect you are looking at it the wrong way around.

The masks are quite likey for the infected. Not the well.
It's more effective outward protection. Not inward.

Genpop use is Overkill. Known sickness avoidance it is not.

Thats what I meant. Outward infection, so if I was infected, I wont infect o0thers, outwardly. Yes, the well, its no good

Just learned a workmate sitting near me was at that concert too but in the stands, soon as I read out the headline I saw a few heads pop up

I'm sure its not super super easy to get infected, but look at China, how that went down, South Korea now and Italy etc etc and etc. Why tempt fate?

Buit its matching saving lives with saving economic damage. Stated today in not to many words.If they were aggressve and annoyed people like me with isolation, then the virus would be contained sooner and that will limit economic damage

No. That stockpile is critical for our healthcare workers, should we have major outbreaks here. It is likely our stockpile is insufficient. Hospitals overflowing with contagious patents, and no PPE for the staff would be a very bad situation to be in.

Reading between the lines the main reasons that the US & NZ authorities aren't recommending masks for the general public is because there is simply no way such numbers of masks could be supplied, and it is felt the best use of the available masks is in the healthcare industry (plus as normal PPE for trades workers etc).

Situation is a bit different in China. The majority of the worlds mask manufacturing capability is in china, so they were able to capture that supply chain. Also they came first, so they were able to get masks that were instock elsewhere in the word. (Think people buying hundreds of masks from Bunnings and sending them to family in china, or companies ordering thousands of masks for their staff). Also it seems a villain was wanted for the media, and people not wearing masks in public was a good one.
