Batman:

"World Memorial for the Pandemic" to be constructed in Uruguay according to this

https://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/homed/latest/122500283/coronavirus-visually-powerful-world-memorial-planned-for-victims-of-the-pandemic

Maybe they could put it next to the Spanish Flu (1918) memorial. The one that killed (est) 50 million people.

just want to make a quick observation - i've been watching a lot of sport taking place in Europe recently

- soccer matches (international - say a local team from Spain vs England, France vs Ukraine)

- cycling races (like you have 200 people from all over the world bunched up in a sardine packed group riding for 4 hrs a day)

and i'm sure other sport are happening too

when you look at the case rates in Europe over 100,000 cases a day

- so they have learnt to live with covid around them?

I think they are just regarding cases as "collateral damage".

The media here has given up publishing what is happening overseas to focus on a witch hunt here.

The numbers overseas are on fire again - Our problems here are microscopic by comparison.

I think NZers need to look above their own belly buttons and see the big picture - we are lucky as hell.....

But seriously, are there only 2 people in the Govt (PM of everything + Minister of everything) that does any work? the rest of the govt don't appear very useful ...

I guess MSD, Transport, Justice and dozens of others are not useful. MFAT too? I wonder what they do all day. I read last week that they passed 192 laws, 3 X as many as the previous 9 years, maybe thats incorrect

The last government seemed to have just Steven Joyce.

@Dingbatt  there are memorials to those lost in the Spanish Flu pandemic(which took my grandfather) around the globe including New Zealand.

You could easily come to that conclusion with the appointment of Heather Simpson (Helen Clark's former COS) as head of a team to sort things out with the border response rather than a Minister of the Government. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/300086077/coronavirus-heather-simpson-to-spearhead-border-response-some-mori-health-leaders-gutted

Yes, and I was careful to research before I posted. There isn’t an international memorial to it. Just more appropriate community ones rather than virtue signalling nonsense when the pandemic hasn’t run its course yet.

My interpretation of this is that the PM/Ministers are not confident they are being told everything that is/is not going on, this "team" had Heather Simpson are being appointed to be their eyes on the ground, to actually determine what is going on...

Also it give the government much more "hand on" ability to direct those on the ground into doing "the right thing"- Ms Simpson was not decribed as Helen Clark's "enforcer" for nothing, ...when she turned up at your door- Hers comments were generally read as coming from Helen Clark.

that does make sense. but i was pretty sure the heads of govt were informed for a long time that things on the ground were not happening as they should, but oh well now they know, but it's co$t another $hutdown as a result.

National will tighten the border if elected by ensuring all travellers get a negative test before they board

1. If they are newly infected, but no symptoms, they will always give a positive test?

2. Where is the test done? At the airport then onto the aircraft? At a doctor or test centre then wander through Melbourne until the result comes through? Then wander through Melbourne to the airport?

Unless they go to an MIQ hotel, get a test, then if negative then monitored transport to the airport, thats not watertight. The proposal means get a test, hang around in a Covid environment for 3 days then fly here.

1) Nope.

2) Melbourne?  NZ would need to negotiate or force cooperation from many foreign governments - or leave NZers potentially stranded - or make "exceptions", which opens up many cans of worms.

Not a lot of thought seems to be involved in policies being announced like that.  Unsurprising.
