the jury is still out on Sweden, "Sweden has gone from being one of the countries with the most infection in Europe, to one of those with the least infection in Europe, while many other countries have seen a rather dramatic increase,” Anders Tegnell, the country's state epidemiologist, said at a press conference earlier this week.

Stockholm, the centre of Sweden's pandemic in April and May, registered the lowest number of new cases since March last week.

Denmark, meanwhile, registered 179 new cases on Friday, the highest daily number for more than four months.

Moreover, a test last week of 2,500 randomly selected people found that not one had an active Covid-19 infection, compared to 0.9 per cent at the end of April and 0.3 per cent at the end of May.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I suspect the All Blacks calendar is going to end up looking more like a domestic Lions tour than anything else this year.

We might get the Australians in for a few Bledisloe games but I'd be surprised at this point.

Give me the All Blacks vs Thames Valley RFC and take it to the provinces IMO.

The government should mandate ALL National teams games/sports should be permitted to broadcast Free-To-Air due to the new norm of social distancing.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

In a worldwide pandemic, the government should focus time and resources on much more important things. If need be, just ban the holding of all spectator sports. No one will be seriously harmed by not being able to watch sports.

Bars have still had a big place in their clusters, though fortunately they have been able to trace them down before those mini outbreaks got too far.
So far, as they have not traced to extent of elimination its a constant whack a mole, and hope one does not get missed for too long.

Victoria story not just underinvestment in community healthcare, the lowest bid with lowest cost supervision model guided them towards the disaster of the covid hotels, aged care and thence to the large outbreak with continuing death toll.

I'm not sure we can be confident our healthcare system could match NSW , certainly not the Swedes by any measure ( Second highest tax in Europe ).
I remember someone who had a potential cancer scare and seeking assurance from their doctor.
Finally the doctor said if you are that concerned migrate to Australia while you can, you will get better more advanced treatment and have better outcome than here. Otherwise save up enough , keep it aside so you can go there for private treatment.

As time goes on we do get better treatments, with more in pipeline, to manage this better , then potentially or eliminate it or totally manage it, so time does buy us better outcome.

Funny, we were told that last year by a number people who themselves or their family members had an option of treatment in Australia or NZ. This was because of their employer or the medical insurance they had.

Early comments in this topic said something similar.

Looking at the stats for various countries, the lower death rates per confirmed infection and even a lot of the lower overall death rates appear to reflect health system capacity and the effectiveness of intensive medical care.

That is a worry - medical facilities should have 'watertight' scheduling and contact tracing.
This means there is a case out there which has potentially not been identified (a burning ember' as it were.)

To make the excuse that the clinic is located 'near the amaricold site' is a weak cop-out. - Proper registration & contact tracing needs to have been occurring at all times 'since' the first outbreak.

Sweden is a very unique society. Very different to NZs. Plus a very good health system, so they could easily cope with a lot of cases without their health system being overwhelmed, where NZ couldn't, as our health system runs at near capacity almost year round without covid. So Covid filling the hospitals could also cause people to die from not being treated or diagnosed of other illnesses, or just operations to improve peoples quality of life, like hip operations etc..
But still, a Covid country it means that their economy is essentially stuck in a level 2 - 2.5 with social distancing and masks, and a big section of their society is under a level 3-4, and can't live a normal life. And still they have had mass death. Australia have proven that Swedens approach couldn't work in NZ or Oz. Plus it is Summer over in Sweden, whereas it is Winter in NZ and Oz, and these types of viruses may spread worse in winter.

Randomly selecting people is also like finding a needle in a haystack, and may not be a large enough sample either. Plus testing isn't that accurate amongst people who aren't showing symptoms, and how random was it really.

In NZ, if we did a Sweden, we would likely have to require about 1/4 of our society who are higher risk (eg those older than 60, those with chronic health conditions, and higher risk groups), to isolate, and 'take one for the team'. Also I heard the 'Plan B' guy being interviewed on TVNZ Q&A last night, and didn't sound convincing IMO, a pity James Tame didn't really interview him very hard. .

Low testing today not helpful either. How long would a burning ember take to trigger enough cases to start producing symptomatic test results (assuming it could spread)?

Worried that the bigger this mini-cluster gets, the more inevitable it is that it gets that there will be someone who decides they know better or feels they need to cover up their movements.

Your argument could equally be applied to many aspects of life in NZ (excluding food, water, and housing). How much are you going to reduce people's quality of life for not much gain? For some people, watching (or participating in) sports is an important part of their life. Next, you'll need to define "spectator sports". Is Saturday morning schoolkid rugby a spectator sport? How about white water kayaking? Lawn bowls?

And, for thousands of people, ranging from athletes to officials to broadcasters to security to hospitality to hotdog sellers, spectator sports is literally their bread and butter.

The government needs to tread lightly when banning people's livelihoods.

However, I do agree with your first sentence... by now, the government should have set the general parameters of the response, and shouldn't be dealing with the details.
