Rikkitic: ... when there is even serious talk about cancelling the Olympics! Nothing rules here like the almighty dollar.

Serious talk? By whom? Citation? All I've seen is a whole lot of media speculation accompanied by "OMG!!! This is so serious it could affect the Olympics ".

And if you're looking for an example of the mighty dollar trumping fairness and good sense, you don't have to look further than the Olympics.

In Italy today, they have apparently shut down much of it's north and quarantined around 16 million people. It is getting serious over there. The WHO want countries to stamp this out, and not let it spread. If the Olympics do go ahead, I can't see it being in the same type of format. Even in the best of times, there is often illness of some type that spreads through these sort of events when you have lots of people in close proximity.

Is anyone's workplaces making specific provisions that you are aware of?

All Government Depts have been instructed to prepare for working from home by as many as possible. Most have specific provisions in place already.

Cancelling all overseas work related travel and personal overseas travel must be signed off by manager with understanding that if you go and need to be quarantined the employer wont pay sick or alternative leave.

Confirmed over at the BBC

The whole northern region of Lombardy, home to 10 million people and Italy's financial centre Milan, will be closed off except to emergency access, and 14 provinces including Venice, Parma and Modena will be subject to the same measures - affecting a total of around 16 million people.

I understand how you feel because, at the moment, it's quite difficult to decide which events you should or shouldn't go to. For example, should you play tennis because you handle a ball that others have handled and you shake hands at the end of the game. Or should you go to a swimming pool and use dressing rooms that were used by someone else a few minutes ago etc etc?

But, when you state "don't let a little detail like a lethal pandemic get in the way" I think you're overstepping the mark at this point in time. It hasn't been declared a pandemic and although it can be very serious, for 96 - 97% of people it's not actually "lethal". Sure, older men with certain health problems are more likely to die from the virus than most others so these people may need to take more care, but there's no need to scare the living daylights out of people going to the Horse of the Year show.

At the moment, my advice would be that, if there's nobody in your town / city who has the virus, then don't self-isolate yet. I don't think there need to be warnings at public events on how to conduct yourself, if the event is really risky it will most likely be cancelled. So relax a little and enjoy life and don't close your life down just yet!

Point taken. I tend to get hyperbolic at times but I am genuinely angry about this. I am not saying that HOY should be cancelled, but the complete lack of any mention at all of the Corona virus strikes me as highly irresponsible. This event is encouraging as many people as possible to cram together at a time when the virus seems to be spreading, in a place here there are not yet any known infections, and in the face of government efforts to at least pay lip service to minimising the risk of transmission. I feel they have a duty to at least point out basic hygiene measures to minimise risk and to ensure a supply of hand sanitiser to those who do show up. It is not correct to pretend that the risk does not exist.

Upcoming matches in Italian Serie A and the Europa League will be played behind closed doors to combat the spread of coronavirus, the Italian sports minister announced on Monday evening. - News18.com.

The preceding are just two examples of several I have seen. While the Olympics Committee has gone out of its way to assure that the games will take place as scheduled, individual officials like the one above have voiced concerns. It is not just 'media speculation'.

The playing of important football matches to empty stadiums also strongly suggests that official concerns about the virus go beyond just media speculation. But not in Hastings, apparently. That was my point.

Some people have a really sick sense of humour, bordering on malevant.

US Police departments put out fake warnings about coronavirus contaminated drugs

CNN by Madeline Holcombe

Some police departments are putting out fake warnings that illicit drugs could be contaminated with coronavirus in an effort to make drug arrests.

The Tavares Police Department in Florida and the Merrill Police Department in Wisconsin are among those that have taken to social media offering to test methamphetamine and other drugs.

"If you have recently purchased Meth, it may be contaminated," with coronavirus, Merrill Police Department said on Facebook. "If you're not comfortable going into an office setting, please request any officer and they'll test your Meth in the privacy of your home. Please spread the word! We are here for you!"

"Bring it by our station and we will test your batch within minutes!" Tavares Police Department said.

...The post from Merrill police was updated to acknowledge the critical comments it received. But, the department added, similar ploys have worked before and are done with the intention of keeping people safe.

"Just to give you some history, we have actually experienced people report their illegal drugs being stolen, being ripped off in a drug deal, being sold a look-a-like illegal substance, etc.," the department said. "So this attempt, although a long shot, still had some possibility behind it."

"It is our hope that every drug arrest both works to hold offenders accountable for their deeds and provides them with a path toward treatment options."

"older men with certain health problems" is me: late sixties with T2 Diabetes.
I am starting to be just a teeny weeny bit concerned for myself, and have beefed up my 'CDEM reserve' non-perishable food stocks a little.
I'll probably buy another 1kg of rice and another few tins of chopped tomatoes this week.

I'm rather hoping to go to my Dad's 100th birthday party in Sydney in December - we will also celebrate my Mum's 95th birthday and their 70th Wedding Anniversary if they last that long
I wonder if the rather poorly-paid mostly Nepali care staff of their Rest Home will think that sending money home to Nepal is actually worth running the risk of dying of COVID-19.
I am on the edge of becoming actually alarmed about Mum & Dad's situation.

I recall a RNZ story a few years ago on TP in NZ, where they were interviewing a manufacturer, and recall it said that almost all TP in NZ is imported on huge rolls out of Asia somewhere. So hopefully supply  isn't affected

TV said yesterday that its all made here now

My workplace already has many working from home as I do. They placed 14 day self isolation in excess of the Governments rule. And frequent emails re safety guidelines, wash hands etc, that Im sure many will be doing. With the past EQ's affecting the South Island up to Welly, and weather events, Im sure many employers have work from home processes in place. Doesn't help everyone, but anything that helps is a good thing.

LPGA (Womans pro golf) has had events cancelled. MotoGP which has HUGE audiences circa 60,000 to 100,000 per day, has had the main event MotoGP cancelled in Qatar this weekend. Moto2 and Moto3 the two more junior races will be held as they did testing, so the Italians have been there for a few weeks. MotoGP is cancelled as many Italians need to go there last week, and that's not seemed safe or allowed. What I see is many events, international, are being canned. Huge dollars involved but many are doing the right thing. I dont follow soccer but thats all huge, and many are cancelled. Doing the right thing.
