kingdragonfly: New York Times: Trump contradicts the C.D.C. chief’s testimony on masks and vaccines.

...“We’re ready to go as soon as the vaccine happens,” Mr. Trump said. Asked how long he thought it might be before every American could be vaccinated, he replied, “I think it will be very soon.”

...

I'm guessing this is the same "soon" as when he said in March that the virus will hopefully go away at the end of the month "or soon after that"

Politics seems to cause a lot of harm when it comes to the virus, as quickl action has been shown to stop it eg China, NZ, and a handful of other countries. Politics should be taken out of the equation totally. NZ isn't immune to this either, because we just get the opposition parties disagreeing with some approach, because they need to have a point of difference with the election coming up. I think one of the top epidemiologists has already suggested a seperate body should be managing our response from now on, to remove politics from our response.

As suspected and as I mentioned before it would be the case: "Everyone associated with Chapel Downs Primary School asked to get tested as it emerges pupil with Covid-19 attended while waiting for results." (Stuff)

What's wrong with these people?

Agree. According to daily reports NZ is screwed, the economy is a disaster. But for now, the drive against the virus is still by one party, and its still working. Thank goodness we didn't say this is too much after 2 weeks of level 4, or have the Australia bubble ages ago, and the Cooks bubble also ages ago. IMO the politics is not that much from the Govt. The opposing parties are putting forward disagreement, but they aren't running the show. Whatever your poison, what we are doing is working.

100%. Fortunately, as we have seen since March, the flouters, the slackers do affect things, but they are a minority to the overall result. I read yesterday that of the 50,000 that have gone to MIQ, 12 have escaped. It made HUGE news, but the other 4,999,988 of us are what achieved what we have.

As I just posted, trust the process, the score will look after itself, but yes, we do need to take more people to task than we have. I'm excusing the latest escapee, it seems he may have mental health issues, and thats sad, and IMO the finger can't be pointed in that case, thats another conversation.

In order to better classify suspected COVID-19 cases, influenza vaccinations are being put in place on a larger scale here in Germany.

If they only visited the school for 30 minutes, why does the entire school need testing.Seems weird that the entire school needs to be tested, and I thought children were a low risk.

Also this is a good story about schools, and outbreaks,  because it appears that some countries experts (I hope not NZs MOH) have apparently  used Swedens report on how to open schools safetly, when they stopped collecting info, as it would create anxiety among the public.

The problem with this report and indeed others from the (agency) is that they are now being cited by policy-makers and decision-makers across the world as a way to open schools when the reports are gravely flawed," Begg said.

Yes, but we do need to remember that this Auckland outbreak likely started from just a single infected person. Likewise the initial pandemic that started in China also likely started from just a single infected person. So we just need one of these people to break out, who happens to also be infected, and it could cause an outbreak, and that is even more important when we move down to level 1. I would have thought some form of checking on peoples mental health would be going on, and if they are acting strangely, that they should be taken to the Jet Park Facility for treatment. Luckily we do now have police at each site.

Im surprised you said this as as you always want more and more testing? As you say, it just takes one.

Dont follow that at all. 12 broke out in 50,000 MIQ inductees. They are hotels not prisons. Id be more concerned with 1000 protesters and weekly protests than 12/50,000 escapee's.

COVID stir-crazy?

The Washington Post - Australian air carrier’s seven-hour scenic ‘flight to nowhere’ sells out in 10 minutes

today

A seven-hour “flight to nowhere” advertised by Australian airline Qantas sold out within 10 minutes on Thursday, the carrier told Reuters.

To comply with restrictions on interstate travel, the flight will depart Sydney on Oct. 10 and return on the same day, with no stops along the way.

But passengers are promised views of the Great Barrier Reef, the Uluru monolith and the Australian outback as the plane flies over the country at low altitudes.

The 134 available seats quickly vanished at prices that ranged from $787 to $3,787 Australian dollars, according to Reuters.

It’s probably the fastest selling flight in Qantas history,” a spokeswoman for the airline said. “People clearly miss travel and the experience of flying. If the demand is there, we’ll definitely look at doing more of these scenic flights while we all wait for borders to open.” ...

From looking at this tonight it would seem the test was taken on Saturday after 14 days in self isolation due to being a close contact. Due to (obviously) being asymptomatic during testing there is no requirement to self isolate.

It would seem that they then found out the test results after 8:30am and rushed back to the school to collect them at 9am, which doesn't stack up with media reports that they found out that afternoon. The case was notified as part of the 1pm update on Monday.

This article provides further details

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2020/09/coronavirus-south-auckland-school-parents-very-angry-student-s-positive-case-wasn-t-notified-earlier.html

Parents of other children at the school furious they were not advised until 2pm Wed but it seems the authorities did not know the girl had been to school on the Mon morning until Wed am.

As a household contact of an existing case, surprised she was not required to isolate until after a negative test result, asymptomatic or not

There is so much about this case that doesn't stack up - and that story doesn't yet answer all the questions.
