BBC News - Coronavirus testing: Simple test gives results in 90 minutes

A rapid test can accurately diagnose a coronavirus infection within 90 minutes without needing a specialist laboratory, say scientists.

The study by Imperial College London showed the "lab-on-a-chip" gave comparable results to current tests. ...

The device, developed by the company DnaNudge, can be used by anyone capable of taking a swab of the nose or throat.

The swab is placed inside a disposable blue cartridge which contains the chemicals needed for the test.

This in turn is slotted into a shoebox-sized machine to perform the analysis.

[A study published in the Lancet Microbe] compared results when samples from 386 people were given both the DnaNudge and standard laboratory tests.

"The performance was comparable, which is very reassuring when you're trying to bring in a new technology," said Prof Graham Cooke, from Imperial College London.

"Many tests involve a trade-off between speed and accuracy, but this test manages to achieve both." ...

The UK has already ordered 5,000 of the Nudgebox machines and 5.8 million of the disposable cartridges.

Batman: It'd be interesting to know what instructions were given following the test. Were the family (presume whole family was tested) told to isolate or given green light to go out - afaik self isolation was for 14 days so presumably when kids went to school or was after 14 days.

Any journalist here? Presumably one or two would read GZ. Please ask it sounds like those on this thread want to know.

From the MoH media release on Monday (https://www.health.govt.nz/news-media/media-releases/1-new-case-covid-19-18), the child was "epidemiologically linked to an existing case" (read 'household member') and from the Newshub article, ARPHS‌ had communicated‌ ‌the‌ ‌importance‌ ‌of‌ ‌staying‌ ‌in‌ ‌self-isolation. And, according to the article, the family had been cooperating "until‌ ‌this‌ ‌event". Then it was not until two days latter that "health‌ ‌authorities‌ ‌received‌ ‌information‌ ‌that‌ ‌the‌ ‌child‌ ‌had‌ ‌attended‌ ‌school‌".

Of the new cases, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said five were imported and involved Malaysian returnees from New Zealand (two in Selangor), India (one in Sabah), Pakistan (one in Sabah) and China (one in Sabah).

Guess it will be report in NZ media in the morning, wonder is it transit in Singapore and accidentally caught at the airport or else it's a direct flight caught in the flight from Auckland to KL or even maybe there CT out there that we don't know.

There have been quite a few of these detected cases from people from NZ. Most of the time the DG explained that it was likely that the person was someone who was infected prior to the first lockdown, and just had it still in the system, but not infectious . But I am surprised that if this is the case, why we aren't picking up some of these cases in our testings that is going on? Or maybe the testing is different over there?

They seem to use both type the nasal and oral swab. But no matter which they use, still positive cases. Will be surprised NZ MoH came out & said they had 2nd test and come out negative.

Starting to see the cracks between MoH & Govt. First the Govt want 10k testing, after that MoH release that "All West & South Auckland" to go test, then PM angry about that call for the testing. Since then no one mention about the 10k testing at all.

Now lack of 1pm briefing, only media release statement. Seem like they don't want media asking them questions. Season 1 PM & Director of Health pretty much everyday, Season 2 PM become cameo, health minister & Director of Health during the early stages and now pretty much none existent.

If the PM or other minister was to hold / front up at daily briefings now, they'd be accused of "campaigning".

The government and MoH in NZ have done a superb (but not flawless) job controlling C-19 which has saved many lives - so get over it.

The UK has already ordered 5,000 of the Nudgebox machines and 5.8 million of the disposable cartridges.

They do only one test at a time. So although the devices are relatively inexpensive, you'd practically need one device per passenger for example if screening passengers at an airport. Doesn't solve the main problem, a negative result doesn't mean the passenger is no risk, so you'd still need to quarantine (ie in NZ case) and re-test.

In a hospital / clinic etc, probably very useful for screening patients quickly - rather than waiting for samples to be couriered, tested in batches etc.

i don't think it takes a study to show that

We've a lot of things from airlines about how there's no risk for flights or from flight crews because cabin air is filtered to the extent that viruses can't spread throughout a plane.

Given the Bluff cluster is supposedly linked to a flight crew member, it seems like useful knowledge to have.

That was my point some time ago about the problem with running an election campaign during the middle of the covid crisis. But there is nothing stopping the MOHs DG holding the press conference by himself. Also one of the top epidemiologists did call for an independent body to manage the covid crisis, so it didn't get political. IMO it is important that reporters can ask questions at the standups, because there is often a lack of information in the press releases as the info can be cherry picked, rather than always following a set uniform format. The press conference potentially have already stopped a potential major problem occurring. eg With universities wanting to hold lecture theaters of more 300 people in Auckland, which the DG wasn't aware of until a reporter asked the question at the standup. The DG said that that didn't sound right as they could only be in groups of up to 10.This press conference was only with the DG, so no minsters were involved, so they are possible to do. IMO COVID does need to remain as a top story otherwise people will again get complacent, testing will drop, and we will likely get another case that can't be linked in the community. That may then require another lockdown, to identify where it has come from, and again we could be weeks behind it. IMO we should be doing all we can do avoid another lockdown, and keeping up widespread testing is a lot cheaper than another level 3 lockdown.

CNN: An Idaho pastor skeptical of masks lands in the ICU for Covid-19

A pastor in Idaho who called himself a "no-masker" during a service and repeatedly questioned the veracity of coronavirus case reporting is in the ICU after contracting Covid-19.

Paul Van Noy, senior pastor at Candlelight Church in Coeur d'Alene, has spent two weeks in the hospital with a Covid-19 diagnosis, ministry coordinator Eric Reade confirmed to CNN. Five other church staff were infected with coronavirus, too, but they've all recovered, he said.

n a July 22 service that was posted online, Van Noy said while he doesn't mind if other people wear masks, he didn't "want to be told" he needed to wear a mask.

He also said he wouldn't comply if the city ordered him to halt in-person services, though the church also livestreams its services. Nationwide, church leaders have been fined -- and even arrested -- for holding services during the pandemic.

...In a July Facebook post, Van Noy falsely claimed that wearing masks doesn't prevent Covid-19 transmission, and he urged his parishioners not to fear the "cause or effect of Covid-19."

"May we keep our heads at a time like this," Van Noy wrote. "And, may we defend our freedoms lest they quickly disappear. We will not close down our church, we will not stop singing praises to the Lord, and we will not be required to wear masks or refrain from allowing those who wish to wear one the opportunity."

Van Noy's church will soon host two controversial figures who've flouted coronavirus guidelines and questioned mask mandates: Charlie Kirk, founder of the conservative student group Turning Point USA, and Rob McCoy, a California pastor who was fined for holding indoor church services despite Covid-19 restrictions. The men will speak at services later this month to "work to make sense of what the church's proper role in America can and should be in the face of increasing opposition and cultural animosity."

I agree any presence of the PM or a Minister would be seen as electioneering.

I think you may have missed what pinky was getting at.

There can be briefings without the PM or any Minister but that's not happening on a regular basis.
