I was standing in line at the door of the vaxx centre a couple of weeks ago to get my second jab. There was a person on the door doing temperature checks and asking questions before allowing entry.

A polynesian woman ahead of me asked about bringing her relatives to get vaxxed on a walk-in basis. The person on the door asked several questions about ID and did they have passports. I have no idea why. On reflection 15 minutes later it sounded kind of racist. Eventually the lady was told turn up and we'll figure it out. I had the impression all this was not a pleasant experience, it did not sound like it.

I don't recall being asked anything like this. My question is - what is the eligibility for vaccination and testing?

Just to be clear, everyone in the country is eligible, and ID isn't required.

We do want to make sure people get their vaccination against their record and not someone else's so we have a process to do this. Sometimes with non-english spelling it can be easier if this is written down, this might be why people are asking for ID but they could equally just ask the person to write their name, or do a confirmation check of details we hold. It is probably lazy and not helpful, rather than deliberate.

As an aside, if you have come through the online booking system we have ~90% of the time already matched your details to your NHI.

You will be asked:

  • for your name, date of birth and physical address so we can verify this in the COVID Immunisation Register (you do not need to show photo ID)

You can find your NHI number on a hospital letter or prescription, or by calling 0800 855 066.
