Hi All,

I think this is the best sub-forum to post this in.

I've noticed a new mobile speed camera along Upper Harbour Drive (Auckland) the last fews days that appears to have a camera element concealed behind the car's taillight. It looks to be a Nissan Wingroad, which is strange, as police typically have used unmarked Toyota Estima's as their mobile camera vans.

The photos aren't the best and in the photo's someone has actually smashed out the camera area as this was not smashed in on Sunday.

I'm just curious, are these a new wave of mobile cameras the police are using? Has anyone seen these before?

Someone was obviously paranoid enough to smash the light out, gave me slight chuckle.

My friend who lives on this road said they've made the entire road a 30KM/h temporary zone for road works, so this is likely to catch people with that.

It's going to cause quite a bit of trouble as the road is normally 70KM/h and people often do 80-90 easily. Not to mention there aren't any obvious road works going on, and these cars are not (yet) known to be used as cameras.

Was there a camera operator in the vehicle? seems strange they would not notice the camera being tampered with......

Fairly sure that "mobile" speed cameras all require some form of manual operation and supervision....

Tending to think its not a speed cam.....

I didn't take the photos, my friend sent them to me today but I'm going to go for a drive there this arvo and take a look myself.

When I drove past it on Sunday (without realising) my radar detector did get a K band trigger, but I presumed it was a false, as K bands triggers usually are. Not to mention the new speed cameras have really low power output apparently, so most detectors can't actually pick them up.

It is possible. And yes, there should be a bloke reading the paper in the back.

Need closer pics, the look of the smashed one doesnt appear to have enough room for the lens face when the left one wraps the reverse/indicators around

I didn't take these photos, but I'll try get some more if it's still there today/tomorrow. It's been there since atleast Sunday and the photos were taken this morning/midday.

Could also be contracted out by the roadworks team for surveillance/monitoring

Have been known to pass worker trucks in dunedin that set the radar off in the car we had by running their own Stalker module in the front :) Sure kept people on their toes

I have not seen a mobile camera that is left "on site", they tend to attract "attention" if/when discovered( as this vehicle has)

+ the Camera gear in them ain't cheap...

Upper Harbour Drive is getting cycle lanes and footpaths.

UPDATE, I just had a look at the vehicle myself, it's definitely not a police camera car, and the camera equipment has been completely bashed out of it (if there even was any in the first place).

tl;dr: False alarm, not a police camera, though would've been cool if it was!

Try Hyundai.

AFAIK camera vans aim the camera and the IR flash at an angle across the road ie through the rear glass of the van. Vehicles with stuffed tail lights are just that.
