I've collected second hand, 4 MTB style bikes over the past few years, and now actually sitting down and sorting out what to keep.

One I've stripped down as parts as it was quite old and had random parts added to it anyway....

So I'm now left with a Giant Upland SE, Mongoose Rockadile, and a Raleigh xxxx (TBC).

However one needs a new wheel and another one need a new cassette (21 speed) and looking online, I'm a little confused about the cassettes.

Are these interchangeable across bike types, such as MTB, road, track etc ? So dosent matter what type I get long as its got 7 cogs ?

My daughter seems happy with the Mongoose so will leave her that and I'll prob use the Giant.

Comes down to the indexer gaps and chain length/link size. Roadys may have a thinner chain (and usually larger casette).

Mixing and matching can be... tricky. Based on the teeth number on top/bottom. IE a 41-17 has 17 on the small one, 41 on the top and chain.

The Shimano CS-HG41-7 Cassette will work seamlessly with all Shimano  Acera, Altus, Tourney, drivetrain components.

Should be some markings on the largest ring somewhere to give you an idea of what teeth count to get. Then it is down to tier of the rest of the groupset it is in

But looks like the range is limited on the 7s https://www.99bikes.co.nz/collections/cassettes-freewheels-drivers/products/shimano-cassette-7s-11-28-acera-hg41

Yeah, you'll need to know a few things about compatibility before you're good to go.
