You could be cheeky, point out that you suspect they reallocated your car, and request they supply you with an EV courtesy car, seeing's how the delay was either their choice or their error, not yours.

Perhaps a chat to Andy Sinclair about the delayed Kona delivery might be worthwhile?

So Mike the Pajero costs would probably be more over its life time than the Kona.Of course if you need a vehicle to tow a heavy load then that's the best option or something similar.Looking ahead a few years and no one is investing in Diesel any more.Governments will start to phase out the use of Diesel towards the end of the next decade .

Are you sure? The lifetime of the Kona is unproven.

Havent read all of the posts but the price and unknown future makes buying an electric Kona a bit unappealing.

Quick calculation in Excel;

$78K gets you a top of the line Kona for 150 000km (around 10 years?) of driving with petrol at $3/L for 7L/100km plus 10 services at $500 a pop.

Given a leaf costs US$5500+installation for a new battery, I cant imagine a Kona battery replacement will be any cheaper. So you will probably be looking at $100K for a Kona over a 10 year lifespan plus of course the cost to charge the thing...

The only thing I can see wrong with Hyundai is they do not make their own batteries and rely on another company for their supply,Tesla on the other hand are making their own with Panasonic tech I believe and are able to produce more vehicles.

tchart the price of battery replacement will drop as more and more ev's are mass produced.In ten years the price will be less of course.However replacement is something not many will bother with anyway as ev's will be cheaper than ice vehicles .

I could be cheeky and mention I also work in the media (true, I do)...but I don't want to push my way unfairly through what I hope/hoped is a fair and reasonable waiting list...I wouldn't want to be that person.

Great to see there is another Kona EV Elite owner who is happily posting of their experience...I truly am happy for the many owners who have posted online how much they're enjoying theirs.

But, all has left a rather sour taste in my mouth.

Indeed I feel close to cancelling my order as, along with feeling I have been pushed down the waiting list, I am being allowed too much time to mull over owning a Kona EV and to really evaluate the $80K expense versus continuing to drive an ICE car.

I am an early adopter of many things....and I thought the Kona Elite EV would see me being an early adopter of electric cars amongst, at least, my family and peers.

I had built myself in to an excited frenzy of expectation watching hours of Bjorn Nyland on youtube enjoying driving and reviewing the Kona in Norway, plus reading (possibly) too many reviews of the Kona EV leading up to my expected delivery before September.

The rather crushing blow delivered a week ago that I would not be getting a Kona EV Elite afterall, was followed by a one-on-one phone call with Andy Sinclair (GM of Hyundai NZ), after I had expressed my huge disappointment on their website.

I appreciated him taking the time out to call me. I was still left with the feeling after our talk, though, (and rightly or wrongly) that I have been pushed down the waiting list. Indeed, I might not end up with a NEW Kona Elite EV before the end of this year (which sticks in my craw a bit having cancelled my 20-month old Tesla Model 3 order, with potential delivery in 2019 too, in favour of a Kona EV).

But then, there is always the Kia Niro EV coming early 2019....maybe I should make a super-duper early deposit on one of those instead? Hmmmmm.......

Searching back through my email archives I have found this June 13 communication with a Hyundai NZ Ambassador:

"It’s possible there are pre-orders with deposits being taken at Fieldays – but I’ll need to confirm. (which presumably would mean a price has been released too!)

I’ll aim to get back to you tomorrow afternoon with more info."

I recall a phone call the next day where I was able to confirm with that ambassador I had paid a deposit with an Auckland Hyundai dealer.

These emails with the ambassador confirm my early communication with Hyundai NZ re byuing a Kona EV ... PLUS my very early deposit.

But hey, my word means nothing, eh. haha

I would forget about it for awhile if I was you Justin.As you know you are not alone in having to wait it out.Look on the bright side ,it will soon be Spring and in a few weeks you will get your new beut Kona.Good of the boss to phone you like that. Some thing tells me these Hyundai people are going to make sure your not let down and are probably trying very hard behind the scenes to get your car over here.

It was explained to me (and I knew this already) that there is a worldwide shortage of Kona EVs...they have proved HUGELY popular in all markets, thanks to the Tesla-like range and practical (compact) SUV shape.

Also, the models coming from Korea to NZ aren't known pretty much until they are on the ship (hence a shortage of ELITE spec Kona as many have been base model instead).

Maybe (hopefully for me) there will be a rush of Elite spec models coming through from now?

I know quite a few car buyers who are leasing expensive vehicles and who think that not having to pay out, say, $80,000 in one lump is well worth considering, even if a cost accountant tells you that it's more expensive this way! The shorter the term you select the more often you can change over to a brand new car, even if this is the most expensive option.

Yeah aware of the world shortage. Hard for this to be the biggest selling EV in NZ if they can only supply 10 in 4 months vs 200+ of the Ioniq EV in 2017 (https://www.hyundai.co.nz/new-zealand%E2%80%99s-best-selling-new-ev-the-hyundai-ioniq). Perhaps Hyundai expect Kona EV production to ramp up markedly in 2019.
