Hi, is it a technical job to install and use the openvehicles hardware? The ability to terminate charging at 70-75% would be wonderful! I currently do it by altering the charge timer and/or charge amperage - which is a bit of a pain.

The hardware just reports the charge level and lets you start climate control remotely. I have a home automation system (Home Assistant) which runs on an old mac mini in my closet, it reads the charge and shuts off the power outlet when it reaches 70%. So you have to be able to control the outlet and read the charge. Alternately I think there are some wallpod chargers that can do this, but it will cost a lot more. My setup is about $200 for the parts.

That's a pretty keen price,

UK retail (inc PICG) is ~30K pounds, less 20% VAT you are looking at 25K, in NZD that's ~50K +GST is ~58 , so there is 5K for Shipping and profit...

(the car in the article is listed as from the UK , but Not having been preciously overseas registered and only had 36KM on the clock at its first WOF....although its been here since June'18) -

Although it certainly does look like they are capacity constrained, but a price with a 5 in front would be great..

The not so good news is you’re unlikely to be able to buy a new Leaf officially here until winter of 2019. And no, there’s no indicative pricing available as yet. Nissan NZ is still going through that process with head office. However, a brief perusal of TradeMe listings suggests near new highly specified models have an asking price of around $63k.

That means Nissan NZ would need to sell Leaf here in the late 50s to steal sales of new used stock. Perhaps they can trim things by offering two spec levels.

Can anyone tell me, how do you look for a used Leaf that has very good battery? When dealer says "12 bar battery" what does that mean? @Ruki

A leaf with 12 bars has a battery state of health (Soh) of at least 85%.

Each bar to drop off represents 6.25 percentage points, therefore a 10-bar Leaf is likely to have a SoH somewhere between 72.5 and 78.75% SoH.

Note that it is possiable for a dealer to "reset" the car, which will make it display 12 bars for a few days.

Ideally get a OBDII bluetooth dongle, and a app called leafspy. This allows you to look at the battery health at a per cell level. Post results here or on the EV owners facebook page if you want to know peoples thoughts.

In theory, any, but older cars (older than aboout mid-2000s) have less standardised comms and may require specific software to interpret or provide less info.

thanks, I've seen so many OBDII plugs on the internet and I have no idea which one to get, not knowing if they will work on my car or not!

Also be aware that some are Bluetooth and some are Wifi, and the Bluetooth ones could be different variants. My (Bluetooth) dongle works with an Android tablet I have but refuses to communicate with either my iPhone or my iPad.

Also be aware that there are several different communications standards that can be used over OBD2. Not all Blue tooth Dongles are guaranteed to work with all brands of car and all applications. I think you need a unit that has ELM327. If you search "leafspy" on trademe you will find listings for dongles that are known to be compatible, so it takes the gamble out of buying.

Well, somewhat, yes. As I said above, I have one of the Leafspy compatible ones (Konnwei) but although it works fine with my Android tablet, it cannot even be detected by the Apples, let alone used!

I think the new firmware for the 30kWh batteries may have 'fixed' that - I took Leafspy readings the day after arriving back from Eltham, which involved 3 or 4 fast charges each day for two days, each way. If it was going to gain some fake SOH I would think that would have done it, but I got not a blip.

Looks like a fully charged Leaf battery that can only go 102 km, with 74882 km on odometer (and 7264 km on trip A), foot brake on and in park mode, and a pleasant battery temp.

The 102 km either means the battery is very worn, or has been driven aggressively, or both (probably the former).
