Any LiPO jump start pack should do fine. LiPO lasts longer and does not suffer from the same safety and heat problems that make Li-ion batteries problematic.

The TCU unit in the drivers footwell can be unplugged. It will make handsfree calling stop working but it otherwise makes no difference in NZ. You can then plug in an OVMS computer and have some remote climate control too :)
happyfunball: What year is your LEAF? A dealer told me this was a problem with older models but not 2015+.
It is a 2013. I'd be surprised if they had not fixed the issue on later models.

The JDM telematics module isn't compatible with the USA head deck nor the NZ cell network, so a number of potential opportunities for stuff to go wrong there. I have read (but not confirmed it from myself) that it is not entirely the fault of the telematics module and that unplugging it, doesn't necessary fix the problem. 1) The telematics module doesn't use that much power, 2) theoretically the excessive power consumption is all the other computers waiting to send data, so 3) if you unplug it, it doesn't solve the problem of the other computers waiting to send data.
I'm always keen to hear from people have experimented with resolving the problem.
..in case you missed me ... summer season kept me busy for gardening, general housekeeping and beach going :-)
in between was helping Leaf owners to:
- programming donor batteries to their Leaf. Couple of boys replaced their batteries themselves, one only used forklift and 4 stands and manual jack to do that;
- deleting keys from Leaf memory - (as one of their keys was stolen);
- programming original and used FOBs;
- helping bringing AV unit to life in case with lost SD - their "birds view" 4 CAM version is not compatible with usual AV unit and hard to source;
- and of course converting dash(es) in ZE0, AZEO, ZE1 to English.

For any interested 2013 Leaf owners with the flat 12v battery problem, I unplugged the Telematics module and experienced another flat battery overnight a few days later, so (in my case at least) disconnecting it didn't help. I'm still thinking about my next move on this.
By the way, it has made no difference to the rest of the car. Hands-free still works just fine, which makes sense because that uses your bluetooth paired phone, not the cars (non-functional anyway) on board connectivity.

Are you sure it works? On my 2016 I can make calls handsfree, but the people on the other end don't hear me. The microphone in the cabin is somehow disabled.
Yeah, I just physically reconfirmed that the mic in the car is working fine (in case I messed up first time).
According to a wiring diagram for a 2013 Leaf that I found on the web, the mic connects to a separate Bluetooth control unit (not the TCU) in the lower trim models with non-integrated head deck.
On the Leafs with the Nav unit/integrated head deck the mic connects directly to the head-deck and doesn't go near the TCU, Bluetooth or any other external unit.
Perhaps the 2017 is different to the 2011/2013? If you google for wiring diagrams for the 2017 year you may get some more clarity.

The new Leaf is a 40Kwh, (apparently 38kwh usable) , range is ~270km - depending on how you measure, (Nissan claim 400km under JC08, but these are widely seen as apocryphal)
As for the e+, I think parallel imports will arrive well before any official launch...
If Nissan nz want a point of difference they must look at the 62kW otherwise people will continue to buy second hand 40kw.

Hi thanks for that info. so it seems that Nissan is not able to match (NZ New) at this point the 64kWh and 450km range offered for the Hyundai Kona and the Kia Niro. But, the problem with the 64kWh Kona and Niro is the very long delivery wait time of around 12 months (according to dealers).
I suppose the NZ-new Nissan Leaf will also have a long wait time, but seriously, why buy 40kWh when NZ-new 64kWh is already here for probably much the same price as the new Leaf will be? I realise that 270km is a good range, but wouldn't it make sense to go for 455km range?

The big kicker will be what is the price?, if they can hit low 50s I think they could really make a lot of sales....
When Nissan started production of leafs in Japan (way back in 2010) , they said they had plant capacity to build up to 50,000 units annually, In 2018 Nissan sold ~26K units domestically in Japan, so allowing for domestic sales to continue to grow there is the potential for at least 30K units for export.... ( they also produce the leaf at 2 other factories in the US and Europe, so they have significant capacity)
I think Leafs will be a lot less constrained by a lack of production than Hyundai and Kia...

A 40kWh car will be fine for most use(r)s. A few people need to go further, but percentage-wise, surely not many. No need to buy a car that is more expensive than you require for 98% of the time.
We have had a 2014 24kWh 96% SOH LEAF for 18 months and that is our only car. We are a family of 4. Including 2 teenagers who both drive.
We live in Wellington, and get around using our own steam a fair bit, so we've 'only' done 16,000km.
We've done day trips to Whanganui (even before the fast charger there). We've not had the need to go further, but would within reason. The last time we drove to Auckland was in 2008.
Not buying a 40kWh car has saved us $20,000+. That's a lot of rental car if we ever needed it.
