In that video, the vlogger is considering changing from the well regarded Kona EV ($74,000 - $80,000 in NZ), to a MG ZS EV ($50k in NZ). Frankly I'm not surprised they weren't satisfied with the car. Note that much of the video related to rust, something that is much more of a problem in the UK.

Rather than admit that they're late to the game and that their offering is extremely underwhelming compared to what every other manufacture is doing, they're trying to spin some "well to wheel" BS that explains why their battery will be so small. At $65k I can't see why anyone would buy this over a Niro or Kona which have double the battery capacity for not a lot more.

Totally agree. Even MG crossover hatch has a bigger battery (44.5kWh) and is $15K cheaper.....For the $65k Mazda is asking for I'd add $8k and get a Tesla Model 3 Standard Rage +.

With regards to the Mazda, The $65k pricepoint is just guesswork by the author. Pay no attention to it.

I think the specs are extremely disappointing for a car that that is expected in late 2020 or early 2021. The vast majority of electric vehicle's available New in NZ now exceed that battery comparison, and further improvement can be expect in 18 months time (i.e. introduction of the Leaf e+)

Even though the specs are disappointing, I don't think it should be compared to the MG, even if the MG beats it on battery capacity. The MG is a low cost offering, the petrol version of the MG ZS starts at NZD24k+ORC, where the Mazda CX3 starts at $32k +ORC. It think the VW e-golf would be a better comparison. Same sized pack, similar power $68500 list price.

But yeah, if you can stretch your budget to a base model 3, (and don't need a short hatchback for parking) then the value offering gets much better. Pretty much the only car that can competed with the base model 3 for value is the Kona, and only if a super long range or small exterior size is more important than every other aspect of the car.

At release, two models will be available, the Porsche Taycan Turbo & Porsche Taycan Turbo S. Can only guess that Porsche are using the 'turbo' label to define the top model in the standard range (e.g. Porsche Macan Turbo, Porsche Cayenne Turbo, Porsche Panamera Turbo are all the top off there respective ranges)

Are you complaining about the price of an electric car made by a sportscar company? Were you expecting it to be priced at the same level as an electric scooter?

Are you complaining about the price of an electric car made by a sportscar company? Were you expecting it to be priced at the same level as an electric scooter?

You know, it amazes me how much publicity that cars which are designed for multi- millionaires get, both on internet and in car magazines etc. A large percentage of cars on our roads are small ones designed for people who aren't millionaires! I hope the EV manufacturers will realise this and perhaps follow the lead of the Honda Concept EV, but even that's going to be expensive, so we're stuck with petrol vehicles for a long time, whether or not the planet can sustain this!

It's not like the Tesla Model S is a cheap car either.

For the Porsche it's either 115,858 for the Turbo or 138,826 for the Turbo S, against 77,200 for the Model S Long Range or 91,800 for the Model S performance. All prices for UK sites

Yes, you are paying a premium for the Porsche, but that is to be expected.

Porsche have chosen to launch the Taycan range toppers to start with, but there will be lesser models in the range as well, the TG video even hinted at a 2WD version as well. This platform will also include a Cross Turismo version as well.

As story on NZ Autocar says Porsche have 30,000 forward orders already, so even if you could afford one, it's going to be a wait.

It's early adopter time ATM, not mass market. A car manufacturer really doesn't care very much if they have 1% or 10% of the NZ EV market, so there's no particular price pressure. And they're aiming to recoup their EV R&D costs.

And bear in mind that fuel for an EV will be a quarter the price of petrol (plus probable savings on maintenance). So although there's a big up-front cost with an EV, you'll make savings every year. And with interest rates at historic lows, now's as good a time as any to borrow money to make future savings.

Having said all that, I'm not leaping into it just yet. I figure that the early adopters will lose a lot when they try to sell their cars against mass-market cheap cars, and that will be the right time to buy.

That's certainly true of the top end New Vehicle market, but on the second hand side I think its different,

If RUCs were reintroduced tomorrow I think it would kick the stuffing out of the ~300 Leafs a month being imported...

EVs will still enjoy an advantage as far as RUC is concerned, but that's over 2 years away

They still save over half the petrol cost, plus maintenance.

However, RUC is a false issue as all vehicles should have it, but I guess when it gets closer to being added back, there will be complaints. If prices of EV's comes down, then that helps equalise it to ICE, same good savings, but spending less to achieve those savings.

The thing driving the move to EVs is climate change......and the need for action is now well beyond urgent. The usual financial calculations are rendered somewhat pointless in the big picture. Saving a few thousand now and later 'enjoying' a planet that is less habitable......well....the priorities are messed up.

If I wanted to know about non-millionaires cars, I wouldn't buy a magazine, I'll just pop outside and wander around the car park. Hence magazines have unobtainable cars in them.

No Porsche is ever going to be cheap. No EV is cheap at this stage in the game. May as well say "Electric? Next!".

I'm glad they building a high performance EV - it helps dispel some of the popular EV myths. The magazine attention is also good in this regard.

These guys were given a pre-release test drive a month ago and essentially told to try and cook the battery. It is a good watch if you want to see a little more on it.

Right. It's incumbent on the Govt to incorporate those future costs into the prices of ICEVs via taxation.
